6th Grade Advance Math Average – MP 1, 2 & 3 Entrance Assessment* SMI - Winter administration Teacher Recommendation 5 = 97 - 100 10 = 97 -100 5 = 1030 + 3 = Yes 4 = 93 – 96 9 = 94 - 96 4 = 1000 - 1029 0 = No 3 = 89 – 92 8 = 91 – 93 3 = 970 - 999 2 = 85 – 88 7 = 88 – 90 2 = 940 - 969 1 = 81 – 84 6 = 85 – 87 1 = 910= 939 0 = below 80 5 = 82 – 84 4 = 79 - 81 3 = 76 – 78 2 = 73 – 75 1 = 70 - 72 Rubric: Students must earn a minimum of 19 out of a possible 23 points to qualify for 7th Grade Algebra. Students who do not exceed 19 points but have maintained an 80 or better average in 6th Grade Advanced Math will be placed in the advanced level 7th grade Pre-Algebra class *The placement assessment is a diagnostic test that will be administered to all 6th grade advanced math students to measure Algebra Readiness. This test will be administered during class and will have no impact on the student’s grade.

Scholastic Math Inventory (SMI) Computer based assessment designed to show Algebra Readiness Adaptive assessment designed to individual student needs Shifts focus from what students do not know to what they are ready to learn Administered throughout the school year The Scholastic Math Inventory (SMI) College & Career is a computer-adaptive, research based assessment that measures student’s readiness for instruction and tracks progress through the years. The Jackson School District began using this program in the Middle Schools in September 2013. Each student in middle school takes a student assessment three to five times a year. This is administered as a 20 – 40 minute adaptive assessment that students take independently on the computer. The test includes an item bank of more than 5,000 items from across five strands of mathematics aligned to the Common Core Standards at each grade level and adapts to each student’s performance, adjusting the level and number of questions until the software arrives at an accurate score. The final SMI score is reported as a Quantile measure – from 0 Q (Emerging mathematician scale) to above 1600 Q. The Quantile score represents the students readiness to succeed with math instruction through Algebra II. SMI shifts the typical assessment format from pinpointing what students do not know to defining what material students are ready to learn. The shift is instrumental in helping students achieve success with math instruction in the classroom. Teachers receive reports indicating student scores and growth and can use the data to provide interventions addressing students at the appropriate level.

When will I know what class my child is recommended to take in 7th grade? SMI administered in school (Fall, WInter and Spring) Report card grades calculated after 3rd marking period Entrance test will be taken in 6th Grade class Letters will be sent home the first week of June for all 6th grade advanced math students with their 7th grade placement
