2 Topics Covered in 6th Grade Math
Numerical Expressions and Factors Fractions and Decimals Algebraic Expressions and Properties Areas Polygons Ratios and Rates Integers and the Coordinate Plane Equations and Inequalities Statistical Measures Data Displays Surface Area and Volume

3 Math Placement Criteria for Pre-algebra and 7th grade math
Math Final Average Pre-Algebra Readiness Assessment Spring MAP score * = 3 points – 100 = 3 points High = 3 points 80 – 89 = points – 89 = 2 points High Average = 2 points 70 – 79 = point – 79 = 1 point Average = 1 point Below 70 = 0 points Below 70 = 0 points Low = 0 points * Operations and Algebraic Thinking Placement: Pre-Algebra (8 – 9 points) th Grade Math (0 – 7 points)

4 Strategies to Help Prepare for the Pre-Algebra readiness Assessment
Review study guide and complete extra practice problems throughout the year in the 6th grade Big Ideas textbook (green). Answers to odd number problems are in the back of the textbook. View lesson/example tutorials on the Big Ideas website or other sites such as Khan Academy. All 6th grade students have online access to the textbook. Study Guides will be distributed to all students by November 1 and posted on teacher pages on the Medford Lakes website.

5 Topics Covered in 7th Grade Math and Pre-algebra
Integers (Both) Rational Numbers (Both) Expressions and Equations (Both) Inequalities (Both) Ratios and Proportions (Both) Percents (Both) Constructions and Scale Drawings (Both) Circles and Area (Both) Surface Area and Volume (Both) Probability and Statistics (Both) Graphing and Writing Linear Equations (Pre-Algebra only) Real Numbers and the Pythagorean Theorem (Pre-Algebra only) Exponents and Scientific Notation (Pre-Algebra only) Transformations (Pre-Algebra only) Angles and Triangles (Pre-Algebra only) Volume and Similar Solids (Pre-Algebra only)

6 Math Placement Criteria for algebra and algebra survey
Math Final Average Algebra Readiness Assessment Spring MAP score * = 3 points – 100 = 3 points High = 3 points 80 – 89 = points – 89 = 2 points High Average = 2 points 70 – 79 = point – 79 = 1 point Average = 1 point Below 70 = 0 points Below 70 = 0 points Low = 0 points * Operations and Algebraic Thinking Placement: Algebra (8 – 9 points) Algebra Survey (0 – 7 points)

7 Strategies to Help Prepare for the Algebra readiness Assessment
Review study guide and complete extra practice problems throughout the year in the 7th grade Big Ideas textbook (Red) and Pre-Algebra Big Ideas textbook (Red, Accelerated). Answers to odd number problems are in the back of each textbook. All 7th grade students have online access to both textbooks. Study Guides will be distributed to all students by November 1 and posted on teacher pages on the Medford Lakes website.

8 Strategies to Help Prepare for the Algebra readiness Assessment
During Advisory, borrow a Pre-Algebra student's notebook and practice the more difficult/new problems. View lesson/example tutorials on the Big Ideas website or other sites such as Khan Academy.

9 Probationary Placement in Algebra
Pre-Algebra students earning 6 – 7 points in the 8th grade math placement criteria will be on probationary placement in Algebra. 7th Grade Math class students earning 8 – 9 points in the 8th grade math placement criteria will be on probationary placement in Algebra. In order to remain in the Algebra 1 class, students must maintain an average of no less than 90% in Algebra 1 for the first marking period. Please note that the first marking period is a review of the 7th grade Pre-Algebra program. Averages will be checked midway through the 1st marking period and again at the end of the 1st marking period. If a probationary student’s average falls below 90% at either checkpoint, the student will be moved to an Algebra Survey class. In order to remain in good standing for the second marking period, students are expected to maintain an average of 83% or above in Algebra 1. Averages will be checked midway through the 2nd marking period and again at the end of the 2nd marking period. If a probationary student’s average falls below 83% at either checkpoint, the student will be moved to an Algebra Survey class.
