Nelson County Staff Development Day August 30, 2013

Common Core Standards: Progression of a standard The CC standards are organized in a linear fashion that acknowledges that the work of a first grade teacher contributes to the growth of a tenth grade student.

6 th Grade7 th Grade8 th Grade 1.Whole Numbers and Decimals 2. Ratios 3. Proportions 4. Expressions 5. Equations 1. Rational Numbers 2. Ratios - Unit Rate 3. Proportional Percent Relationships 4. Algebraic and Numeric Expressions 5. Equations and Inequalities 1.Rational and Irrational Numbers 2. Ratios with Unit Rate as the Slope of a graph 3. Graphing Proportions 4. Algebraic and Numeric Expressions Expressing Scientific Notation 5. Solving Linear Equations Review of Common Core standards progression Instructional units revisited and revised based on standards-based pacing guide.

Learning TargetBefore Lesson After Lesson 1.I can use number line models and rules to add signed integers and other rational numbers. (Lesson 5) 7.NS.1 1.I can subtract rational numbers by rewriting them as addition problems and then adding them. (Lesson 5) 7.NS.1 1.I can use number properties to add and subtract three or more rational numbers. (Lesson 6) 7.NS.1 1.I can order, compare, add, and subtract positive and negative integers. (FALS) 7.NS 1.I can multiply integers, fractions, and decimals by -1 and identify patterns that lead to the rules for multiplying signed numbers. (Lesson 7) 7.NS.2 1.I can use number properties and rules to simplify expressions involving multiplication. (Lesson 7) 7.NS.2 1.I can divide integers by non-zero integers to identify patterns that lead to the rules for dividing signed numbers and to the algorithm for dividing rational numbers. (Lesson 8) 7.NS.2 1.I can use number properties and rules to divide rational numbers. (Lesson 8) 7.NS.2 1.I can use long division to convert a positive and negative rational numbers to a decimal. (Lesson 9) 7.NS.2 1. I can write and simplify complex fractions in order to solve real-world problems. (Lesson 10) 7.NS.3 1.I can write expressions involving the four operations and use them to solve rational number problems. (Lesson 11) 7.NS.3 Directions: Evaluate your own level of mastery on each of the learning targets listed below according to the following scale: 1 = I’m just beginning – I don’t know how to do any of this. 2 = I’ve made a little progress - I know a little bit about how to do this. 3 = I’m halfway home – I can do some parts of this well. 4 = I’m almost there – I know ho to do this pretty well. 5 = I made it – I’m confident that I can do this very well. Began Unit – August 28 th End Unit – September 18 th (Unit Test) Common Assessment – September 11 th Identified the lesson where the common core learner target was taught. Developed a form for students to self-assess their mastery of learner targets within an instructional unit.

2012-Present Pacing GuideCommon Assessments : Aligned to Common Core

Pacing Guide/ Lesson Plan Development Questionnaire Are you on target with pacing guide? What are your concerns with the pacing guide? How are the common assessments going if you have administered one? Grade Level Teams Please describe your plan to use MAP data and resources. Reflection of pacing guides to instructional units Standards-based units and assessments Evaluation of the monitoring of student achievement on assessments

Review of common core standards

Review of Curriculum Analysis of student achievement Identification of next steps

Grade Level Teams Please describe your plan to use MAP data and resources. Identification of specific research-based strategy to address standards-based skill expectations/intervention. Analysis of the learner outcomes of a common core standard and method of assessing whether a student ‘got it.’

The Bottom Line Nelson County Schools… Focused on a systemic means to identify common core standards that includes a means of assessment to guide content delivery decisions and inform instructional practices.
