The Moodle eLearning platform -University of Pitesti- Cristina Tudose – system administrator Viorel Păun – platform developer Hello!

Why Moodle? Moodle is an open source platform It is “highly flexible, giving education institutions the power to extend and add features for a custom learning environment” “Moodle allows educators, of any kind, to create a private space online, filled with tools that easily create courses and activities, all optimised for collaborative learning”. https://moodle.com/

History and numbers The platform was developed in september 2017 Today, there are around 9000 users accounts created (for both teachers and students) Today, there are around 290 lists of users – so called cohorts.

The cohort term Moodle uses the term cohort to simplify working with users. For example, a cohort is a list of students beginning to study Informatics at Department of Mathematics and Informatics in 2018. We have also teachers cohorts, that contains the teachers from each department. This helps the teacher to add more easier users to the list of participants to the course. Every year, the accounts corresponding to the graduates students are deleted from the users accounts and also the corresponding cohorts and some new users accounts/cohorts are created.

How the platform is structured? The site is organized as a hierarchy of course categories and subcategories They are eight course categories corresponding to: the six faculties of the university, Department of Teacher’s Training (DPPD) Muntenia Training Center For each categories that represents faculties, the subcategories are usually the correspoding departments. The subcategories for each departments are corresponding to the department theachers

Administrator’s main tasks Manage courses and categories Manage users: Add a new user Upload users from a file Add new cohort Upload cohorts from a file Add a user to a cohort Delete a user from a cohort Manage reports

Teacher’s main tasks Select the subcategory with his name (created by the administrator) and creates a new course. Add a resource to the course: Book, File, Folder, URL, ... Add an activity to the course: Assignment, Chat, Forum, Feedback, Quiz ... Add participants to the course by selecting users or cohorts and assignning them the student role.

Principal activities modules Chat - enables participants to have text-based, real- time synchronous discussions. Forum - enables participants to have asynchronous discussions i.e. discussions that take place over an extended period of time. Assignment – enables a teacher to communicate tasks, collect work and provide grades and feedback. Final grades are recorded in a gradebook. Students can submit files or type a text directly into a text editor

Quiz activity module The quiz activity enables a teacher to create quizzes comprising questions of different types, including multiple choice, matching, short-answer, numerical, … The teacher can allow the quiz to be attempted multiple times, with the questions shuffled or randomly selected from the question bank. A time limit may be set. Each attempt is marked automatically, with the exception of essay questions, and the grade is recorded in the gradebook. The teacher can choose when and if hints, feedback and correct answers are shown to students. Quizzes may be used As course exams As mini tests for reading assignments or at the end of a topic As exam practice using questions from past exams To deliver immediate feedback about performance For self-assessment

The glossary activity module enables participants to create and maintain a list of definitions, like a dictionary, or to collect and organise resources or information. Feedback - enables a teacher to create a custom survey for collecting feedback from participants using a variety of question types including multiple choice, yes/no or text input. The users can communicate also via a messaging system.

Enroll users to the course, by selecting users or cohorts usually with student role
