These tools are increasingly being sidelined Medical school is full of evidence to this effect UpToDate® is probably the ‘go to’ resource than Harrisons textbook The institutions are mostly stuck with the traditional systems However there is progression towards eLearning

7 Motivation for eLearning at Moi University Google Android for Good Project Received more than 1,300 Android Nexus 7 Tablets To be distributed to faculty, students and clinicians at Moi University, MTRH and AMPATH Main use will be to deliver medical content to students HIV and other chronic diseases content to clinicians at Ampath and other peripheral sites CMEs for faculty Need for content to be contextualized to our setting Upcoming Institute of Biomedical Informatics Masters and PhD programs in health informatics

8 Kenya Medicine eLearning portal

9 The portal Portal based on Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) Easy to modify and install It is modular allowing installations of a choice of plugins We implemented 18 modules that enabled the following functionalities Lessons, Wikis, Forums, Quiz, Surveys, Files etc. Implemented a mobile application Available for Android, iOS, Windows

10 The portal Currently includes the following content: Kenya clinical guidelines MTRH medicine ward handbook Chronic disease modules (HTN & DM) AMPATH ART guidelines Internal Medicine Outlined comprehensive content for 600+ topics Health Informatics All content access is logged

11 Modules Lessons Linear set of instructional material following a set path Can include questions in the path - this may determine if a student proceeds to the next page or is taken to another pathway altogether Quizes multiple choice, matching, short-answer and numerical Question shuffling and random selection Setting of time limits Automatic marking hints, feedback and correct answers

12 Modules.. Survey Assignments Submission of documents, spreadsheets, images, or audio and video clips. Submission individually or as a member of a group Automatic emails once feedback is available Automatic grading Chats Enable online meeting of students, student-teachers Question – answer insterraction with a tutor/invited speaker

13 Modules… Forum asynchronous discussions i.e. discussions that take place over an extended period of time. Restriction rules Peer evaluation & grading Wikis Students can collaborate on building wiki resource (e.g. as part of a project) Versions for each page kept and versioning system Personal journal for students – e.g. revision for exams

14 The Result Collaborative and curated content across institutions Moi University, AMPATH, FACES, MTRH Possibilities of CMEs administered through KMA/Board The 1,300+ tablets will provide offline content access from the portal to several students, faculty and clinicians Self paced learning Make kenyamedicine.info a one stop shop for everyone to access Kenya specific medical content, guidelines and institution specific publications
