ANSI Safety Colors Engineering Concepts

ANSI The American National Standards Institute has served as administrator of the US private sector standardization system for more than 90 years. Accredits standards that are developed by different organizations, private or government The standards ensure that the characteristics and performance of products are consistent, that people use the same definitions and terms, and that products are tested the same way.

Red Safety Red means Danger and/or Stop. Common equipment or occurrences in a lab Fire protection equipment Containers of flammable liquids Stop bars and switches on machinery Fire alarm boxes Fire exit signs Blanket boxes Extinguishers Sirens

Yellow Safety Yellow designates caution. Common equipment or occurrences in a lab: Caution, physical hazard Handrails, guardrails Exposed, unguarded edges Exposed edges of platforms and curbing Doorway projections Low beams Yellow and black stripes or yellow and black checkers are used to mark traffic patterns

Orange Safety Orange identifies dangerous or parts of machines or energized equipment. Common equipment or occurrences in a lab: Exposed parts of pulleys Gears Cutting devices Safety starting buttons Inside of movable guards Electrical switch boxes Fuse boxes

Green Safety Green designates safety and the location of first aid and safety equipment. First aid dispensers First aid kits Eye wash station Safety showers Other safety equipment Safety instruction signs

Blue Safety Blue identifies safety information used on informational signs and bulletin boards.

Purple Safety Purple represents Radiation Hazards
