CHRIST IN THE HEAVENLY SANCTUARY Lesson 5 for May 5, 2018 CHRIST IN THE HEAVENLY SANCTUARY

His work in the Outer Court. The sin offering. The Lamb of God. God ordered Moses to build a model of the Heavenly Sanctuary. God would use it to explain the plan of salvation He prepared before the foundation of the world. As we study the sanctuary, we learn the role of Jesus in each phase of that plan. His work in the Outer Court. The sin offering. The Lamb of God. His work in the Holy Place. The High Priest. The Intercessor. His work in the Most Holy Place. The purification.

THE SIN OFFERING “The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” (Luke 24:7) The Outer Court of the Sanctuary in the desert symbolized Jesus’ work on Earth. Jesus—the eternal God (Isaiah 9:6)— became human and “has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.” (Hebrews 9:26 NIV) He was willing to offer His own life to gain our redemption. He left the heavenly places and was born as a man. He was born to die. He knew what he would suffer. Nevertheless, He decided to go ahead with His redeeming work due to His great love.

THE LAMB OF GOD “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’” (John 1:29) Every sacrificed animal on the Altar of Burnt Offering before the veil was torn symbolized the Lamb of God who would spill His blood on the cross. Jesus is the only One who has lived a sinless life in this world. His death is the only means to forgive our sins (Acts 4:12) After the slain Lamb finished His work on Earth—the Outer Court—by His death and resurrection, He became our High Priest in the Heavenly Sanctuary.

THE HIGH PRIEST “For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.” (Hebrews 7:26-27) Jesus was made a priest after the order of Melchizedek. That’s an order that is not bound to a specific family and is not subject to sin or death (Hebrews 7) The priesthood of Jesus is permanent. It’s based on only one sacrifice, and that sacrifice is enough to forgive every sinner who comes to Him by faith. That role as a High Priest is part of the work of Jesus in the Most Holy Place of the Heavenly Sanctuary.

THE INTERCESSOR “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” (Hebrews 7:25) The High Priest entered the tabernacle with the names of the tribes written on his ephod. He represented every Israelite before God and interceded for them. Jesus is our High Priest and appears “for us in God’s presence.” (Hebrews 9:24 NIV). He represents the repentant sinners before the Father and offers His blood on their behalf. Thanks to Jesus, we can be sure that we are accepted by God. “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.” (1 John 2:1 NIV)

THE PURIFICATION “Therefore it was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.” (Hebrews 9:23) That quote is a reference to Leviticus 16. Paul states that the Heavenly Sanctuary must be purified like the earthly one was. On the Day of Atonement, the High Priest entered the Most Holy Place, and the presence of God was revealed on the Mercy Seat. That was a day of judgment. The work of Jesus in the Most Holy Place was prophesied in Daniel 8:14. That prophecy explains that the Judgment began in 1844, and it will end just before the Second Coming of Jesus.

Daniel 8 + Daniel 9 2,300 years 490 years 1,810 years 457 BC 34 AD The Sanctuary is purified The Decree The Martyrdom of Stephen

“The intercession of Christ in man’s behalf in the sanctuary above is as essential to the plan of salvation as was His death upon the cross. By His death He began that work which after His resurrection He ascended to complete in heaven. We must by faith enter within the veil, ‘whither the forerunner is for us entered.’ Hebrews 6:20. There the light from the cross of Calvary is reflected. There we may gain a clearer insight into the mysteries of redemption. The salvation of man is accomplished at an infinite expense to heaven; the sacrifice made is equal to the broadest demands of the broken law of God. Jesus has opened the way to the Father’s throne, and through His mediation the sincere desire of all who come to Him in faith may be presented before God.” E.G.W.
