1 Hebrews 7:20 – 8:13 New Covenant
18 For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. Hebrews 7:18-19

2 Old and New 20 This new system was established with a solemn oath. Aaron’s descendants became priests without such an oath, 21 but there was an oath regarding Jesus. For God said to him, “The Lord has taken an oath and will not break his vow: ‘You are a priest forever.’” 22 Because of this oath, Jesus is the one who guarantees this better covenant with God. Hebrews 7:20-22 (NLT)

4 Old and New 23  The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing, 24 but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. 25 Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7:23-25

6 Old and New 26 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the Law appoints men as high priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints a Son, made perfect forever. Hebrews 7:26-28

8 Old and New 1 Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a minister in the sanctuary and in the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man. 3 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices; so it is necessary that this high priest also have something to offer. Hebrews 8:1-3

10 Old and New 4 Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since there are those who offer the gifts according to the Law; 5 who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was warned by God when he was about to erect the tabernacle; for, “See,” He says, “that you make all things according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.” 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises. Hebrews 8:4-6

12 New Covenant 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second. 8 For finding fault with them, He says, “Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, When I will effect A new covenant With the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; 9  Not like the covenant which I made with their fathers ON the day when I took them by the hand TO lead them out of the land of Egypt; For they did not continue in MY covenant, And I did not care for them, says the Lord. Hebrews 8:7-9

13 New Covenant 10 “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel After those days, says the Lord: I will put MY laws into their minds, And I will write them on their hearts. And I will be their God, And they shall be MY people. 11 “And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen, And everyone his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ For all will know ME, From the least to the greatest of them. 12 “For I will be merciful to their iniquities, And I will remember their sins no more.” 13  When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear. Hebrews 8:7-13 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. Luke 22:20

14 Living in the New Covenant
“Why have the Law in the first place?” “Doesn’t God want us to follow the law?” Law vs. morality “Doesn’t God desire sacrifices?” “I like the traditions and rituals, they make me feel close to God.” “So, are all rituals bad?” “Don’t we mature in our faith by following the Law?” “How do I grow in closeness with God without falling into the old covenant?” Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. Galatians 3:24 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and  to prayer. Acts 2:42 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Galatians 5:13 Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. John 17:17 16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. Psalms 51:16-17
