The Offices Of Christ

Christ as a Prophet Prophet Definition: To bubble forth, as from a fountain AKA: To utter

Christ as a Prophet Exodos 3:15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The L ORD, [d] the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.d

Christ as a Prophet Exodus 3:18 18 And they will listen to your voice, and you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The L ORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us; and now, please let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the L ORD our God.

Christ as a Prophet 1. Christ is the fulfillment of the prophecy that God would send a prophet like Moses as the one who would speak both from God as God. (Deut 18:18) 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 2. Christ called the people to repentance. (Luke 5:32) 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” 3. Christ predicted his death and resurrection. (Matt 17:22-23) 22 As they were gathering [a] in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.a 4. His prophecies did come true…Some are still to come true. (Luke 24:44) 44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

Christ as a Priest Priest Definition: One who offers sacrifices

Christ as a Priest 1. Jesus fulfills this role by his death on the cross. He was the perfect sacrifice not only because he was blameless but because it was his blood not the blood of animals. (Heb 10:4, 9:26, 4:14) 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. 9:26 But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself 2. Unlike the priests who could not enter the holy of holy’s Jesus brings us near to God. We no longer have need for the temple (Heb 9;24) 24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf Jesus has gone into the holiest of holy’s the very presence of God (Heb 6: 19-20) 19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. We have a far greater privilege then those of the old testament, we can also enter in through Christs blood.(Heb 10: 19-20) 19 Therefore, brothers, [c] since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his fleshc

Christ as a Priest 3. Jesus continually prays for us (Heb 7:25) 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost [b] those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.b To Intercede: Not merely to stand as someone’s representative, but to make requests and petitions before someone.

Christ as a King Definition of a King: Having authority to rule

Christ as a King 2 Samuel 7:12 12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever

Christ as a King 1. Christ was born as this King, the king that fulfills the promise made to David. He was even given a title as “King of the Jews” but refused this earthly role (John 6:15) 15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. 2. Jesus did have a kingdom whose arrival he announced. He is in fact a King of a new people (Matt 4:17) 17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” 3. After resurrection Jesus was given far greater authority by God the Father over the church and the universe (Eph 1:19-22) 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church.

Christ as a King Bonus! Jesus will return to earth in great power and glory to reign forever! (Matt 26:64) 64 Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Our Roles Today Understanding our roles today as Prophets, Priests and Kings

Our Roles Today 1. As Prophets. We have a “prophetic” role as we proclaim the gospel to the world, and there by bringing Gods word to the world. In spirit and in truth! 2. As Priests. We are a “Royal Priesthood” (1 Pet 2:9) 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellences of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. We are able to offer a continual spiritual sacrifice to God as we live and acknowledge his name (Heb 13:15) 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.

Our Roles Today 3. As Kings. We share in part of the kingly reign of Christ, since we have been raised with Him in the heavenly reign (Eph 2:6) 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
