Monday, May 6, 2013 Daily Learning Target: I can deconstruct an On-Demand passage based prompt in order to prepare for the on demand assessment.
Bell Ringer Write true or false. On-Demand is an optional assessment that English II students will take in May. All prompts on the On-Demand assessment are narrative. The passage based portion is 90 minutes. The stand alone portion is 40 minutes. The On-Demand is no big deal and it doesn’t matter how I score. The assessment is scored using a 4 point rubric.
NOTES: Argumentative passage based prompt Dissect the prompt- What is the prompt asking you do? (argue, explain, narrate) Argue- support claims in an analysis of a topic Explain- examine and convey ideas and information Narrate- develop real or imagined experiences or events Draw evidence from the literary or informational texts!!!! What form is the prompt asking you to write? Who will be your audience?
NOTES: Argumentative passage based prompt Dissect the passage Look for reasons to support and reasons for your counter Underline/highlight any important ideas Plan your writing What is your position/opinion? Provide background info State your claim or opinion Why do you believe it? (Give your 1st reason) How do you know it is true? (prove your statement with facts, details, examples, etc. Why do you believe it? (Give your 2nd reason) Acknowledge your opposing claims (counter argument) Conclude Restate your opinion Summarize your argument
With a Partner Read the section titled “Writing situation” first. Make note of key words. Then read the “Writing directions”. Make note of what is the prompt asking you to do? What is the purpose of the task? Who is the audience? Make notes.
