Apuntes: Showing Possession Lección 5: La familia

Yo puedo… I can… Success Criteria Use “de” and possessive adjectives to show ownership and relationships Success Criteria Identify two ways to show possession (noun + de + owner, possessive adjectives) Match possessive adjectives with nouns based on number and gender

Using de to Show Possession In Spanish, ’s does not exist. To tell what belongs to someone or to show relationships, use [noun] + de + owner. Example: El gemelo de Cristina → Cristina’s twin brother Los amigos de Juan → Juan’s friends.

Possessive Adjectives Possessive adjectives (my, your, etc.) are another way to tell what belongs to someone or to show relationships. English Meaning Spanish Translation Singular Plural My Your (familiar) His/Her, Its, Your (formal) Our Your (familiar- Spain) Their, Your (formal) Possessive adjectives agree in _____________ with the nouns that they describe. number mi mis tu tus su sus These forms agree in both number and ___________________ with the nouns that they describe. nuestro/a nuestros/as gender vuestro/a vuestros/as su sus

Possessive Adjectives Possessive adjectives are always placed __________________ the nouns they describe. Since su and sus can mean his, her, its, your, and their, the forms de él/ella, de Ud./Uds., de ellos/ellas may be used for clarity. Example: sus parientes → los parientes de él/ella los parientes de Ud./Uds. los parientes de ellos/ellas before His or her relatives Your (formal) relatives Their relatives

¡Practicar! Prove you can meet the Success Criteria Provide the appropriate form of each possessive adjective. Be prepared to translate! ________ (your, familiar) tío ________ (her) novio ___________ (our) abuela ________ (their) hija ________ (my) familia ___________ (our) primos ________ (their) padres ________ (my) sobrinos tu su nuestra su mi nuestros sus mis
