The Heart – Learning Outcomes State the function of the heart. Describe the heart’s structure. Identify the four chambers of the heart. Explain the difference between the left and right ventricles.

The Heart The heart pumps blood around the body. The heart has four chambers – two atriums at the top, two ventricles at the bottom. Ventricles are larger than the atriums. The left ventricle has a thicker wall than the right ventricle. The left and right sides are separated by the septum. Valves prevent blood flowing backwards.
