Research data lifecycle² SERVICES @ University of Victoria Libraries We offer support for... DATA MANAGEMENT PLANS A DMP is a living document that describes key considerations in data management: Data Collection Documentation and Metadata Storage and Backup Preservation Sharing and Reuse Create a plan with the DMP Assistant: assistant.portagenetwork.ca DATA CURATION What are research data? Data that are used as primary sources to support technical or scientific enquiry, research, scholarship, or artistic activity, and that are used as evidence in the research process and/or are commonly accepted in the research community as necessary to validate research findings and results.¹ What is research data management? Practices applied throughout the lifecycle of a research project to improve organization, description, storage, sharing, and long term preservation. Research data lifecycle² Benefits of RDM Maintains data integrity, security, and reusability Supports open science and innovation Increases your research efficiency and impact Fulfills funding agency and publisher requirements Data curation is the active management of research data to produce datasets that are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable³. Create documentation and metadata to describe data Develop file naming conventions and version control practices Transform file formats for reuse and long-term preservation Prepare datasets for deposit to data repositories and archives Findable Accessible Interoperable Reusable ARCHIVING & SHARING Data repositories allow researchers to store, access, preserve, share, reuse, and cite research data. There are a number of platforms for data archiving and sharing. We can help you select the right one. All UVic researchers can deposit data to Dataverse, the library’s research data repository: dataverse.scholarsportal.info Research data (2015).
