INTRODUCTION Data Management Plans (DMP): What are they? Why develop one? What resources are available to you?

WHAT ARE DATA? (i)Research data is defined as the recorded factual material commonly accepted in the scientific community as necessary to validate research findings… OMB Circular A-110

WHAT ARE DATA? “I prefer to think of research data as information structured by methodology and organized in digital products that are used as evidence in the research process.” -Chuck Humphrey, University of Alberta http://preservingresearchdataincanada.net /2013/07/23/data-a-rose-by-any-other-name/

WHAT IS DATA MANAGEMENT? "Data Management" refers to the storage, access and preservation of data produced from a given investigation. Data management is practices through the entire lifecycle of the data…” -Texas A&M, Research Data Management Lib Guide http://guides.library.tamu.edu/DataManagement

WHAT IS A DMP? (OVERVIEW) A DMP typically describes: what data will be produced, how each type of data will be standardized, organized, tagged, archived, shared, distributed, secured, preserved, etc., and who will take responsibility for these actions.

BACKGROUND ON DMPs Opportunities to support new kinds of research Transparency Reduce expenditures on developing the same data set over and over again http://www.nitrd.gov/About/Harnessing_Power_Web.pdf

WHY DEVELOP A DMP? Because you have to: Many funding agencies now require Data Management Plans as a part of the submissions process.

WHAT IS A DMP? (NSF) Data - samples, physical collections, software, curriculum materials, and other materials; Standards - for data and metadata format and content; Policies for access and sharing – incl. IP, protection of privacy/confidentiality, security, etc.; Policies for re-use – including provisions for re- distribution, and the production of derivatives; Archiving - data, samples, and other research products, and for preservation of access.

WHAT IS A DATA SHARING PLAN? (NIH) Components may include: Expected schedule for data sharing Data formats Documentation The data-sharing agreement (if required) Mode of data sharing http://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/data_sharing/data_sharing_ guidance.htm#goals

WHY DEVELOP A DMP? Because you want to: Benefits: Crafting a well thought out DMP could help distinguish your application. Interdisciplinary research generates lots of heterogeneous data. Planning could reduce problems down the line. Publishing your data increases the reach and impact of your research.

WHY DEVELOP A DMP? Because you want to: Benefits (Localized): Crafting a well thought out DMP could help you save time and effort in your research. A DMP could help you in sharing data with your collaborators.

O THER C ONSIDERATIONS FOR A DMP Responsibility - who does what, when? Audience – ID the potential secondary users of the data Selection and retention periods – what criteria will be used? how long will data be retained and/or archived? when will data be transferred to a 3 rd party for curation? Quality Assurance Ethics & Legal Requirements Budget & Financial Aspects http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/content/datama nagement/dmp/elements.html

O NE L AST P OINT The DMP should be an evolving document Image Source: Vizeum blog, http://vizeum.co.uk/p/the-incompatibility-of-human-thinking-and-the-digital-age/evolution/. Jan 22, 2014http://vizeum.co.uk/p/the-incompatibility-of-human-thinking-and-the-digital-age/evolution/

D ISCUSSION In thinking about developing a DMP for your own data: »What are the Benefits? »What are the Barriers / Challenges? »How will the plan be implemented?

A SSIGNMENT Begin to develop your own Data Management Plan
