Q4 Sight Words & Word Study  End of Year Happenings & Calendar Zuccato Newz: May/ June from A to Z! Mrs. Zuccato: abrandner@fsd157c.org / 815.469.3366 Reading As Creepy Creatures comes to a close, we’ll be learning all about ocean animals, which is a kindergarten favorite! Students will work hard on finding the main idea & locate key details that help support the main idea. We also compare/contrast ocean animals be doing lots of fun writing and art activities to accompany the unit! I CAN … ask & answer questions to find meanings of words I CAN … locate the main idea & key details in a nonfiction text I CAN … compare/contrast what happens to characters in stories I’ve read I CAN … understand & use question words (who, what, when, where, why, & how) I CAN … tell you similarities & differences between 2 books Fort Frankfort Picnic: Wednesday, 5/29 This is a fun day that the kids are really looking forward to! If you can join us (siblings welcome, too!) please: meet us at Fort Frankfort at 11:15am. We will be there until 1:00 You may bring your child a special lunch & something fun to play with! (ex: Frisbee, baseball mitt & ball, bubbles, kite, etc.) Don’t forget a blanket to sit on to enjoy the day! Happy Birthday to our May & June Birthdays! Sadie: 6/25 Bennett: 6/26 Q4 Sight Words & Word Study  went are so from in that with what ELA Skills: the kids have WW-ed me with how great they’re doing at identifying & spelling Q4 sight words, which are the toughest we’ve had all year! WAY TO GO! Keep practicing those tricky short vowel sounds & try adding –s, -ed, and – ing to words. Change a letter in a word to make a new word. Read, say and write rhyming words! Spell words with short and long vowels. Reading Strategies: We encourage the kids to go back and reread to self-monitor and correct themselves as readers. Retell stories you have heard using first, next, then, last. I CAN… quickly read Q4 high frequency (sight) words I CAN… read a non-fiction story & tell you what it’s about I CAN… tell you which letters are different in words I read End of Year Happenings & Calendar With all of the excitement happening in May & June, it’s easy to have dates blend together! I’ll do my best to keep you updated by sending home a calendar of May & June with important dates, start times, & details included!  Thursday, May 16: Tie-Dye Day! Please wear clothes that can get MESSY! Wednesday, 5/29: Fort Frankfort Field Trip! Families & special lunches/toys welcome! Thursday, 5/30: Field Day! 12:30-2:30 Wear your tie-dye shirt to school! Friday, 6/7: Last Day of School! Early Dismissal at 11:25 am!

Everything you need to know A-Z! Zuccato Newz May/June Everything you need to know A-Z! Mrs. Zuccato: abrandner@fsd157c.org / 815.469.3366 Writer's Workshop We’re just about to launch our unit on Opinion/Persuasive Writing! The kids will have a great time trying to convince their readers, classmates, and me that “something is the best”, or “that we should or should not do something”, and…. most importantly…. WHY!  During this month, we’ll be doing some Mother’s Day writing, & becoming official entomologists by completing an “Insect Facts” book! During this last month of school, we’ll spend some time editing our old stories, in which the kids get to teach others how to make their writing “super fancy” ! We will continue to work on conventions and making our writing easy to read. I CAN … write about how to do something using ‘first’, ‘next’, and ‘last’ as transitions I CAN … write sentences using Kindergarten spelling which begin with uppercase letters, have spaces, & end with appropriate punctuation Math We’re headlong into Teen Numbers, breaking up teens into 10 ones and some more ones, Quick Subtraction (completing as many problems as possible in 2 minutes) & Subtraction Word Problems! During 4th quarter, students will continue to be exposed to strategies they’ll use in first grade from the get-go. They did so GREAT all year long with this new math resource! VOCABULARY TO REMEMBER: Number Bonds (part + part=whole) 5 Group (recognizing a group of 5 within numbers & actively using this formation to make their own drawings to help solve problems!) Equation & Number Sentence I CAN … subtract to solve word problems I CAN … show subtraction by creating a picture and an equation/number sentence I CAN … quickly subtract numbers up to 5 I CAN … I can count to 100 by 10’s & 1’s I CAN … count on, starting with any number Reminders! Friday, 5/10: Mother’s Day Tea! Please be seated in the BIG GYM by 12:45, which is when the kids will begin their program for you  After, we’ll head to our classroom for a short movie, lots of fun, & pampering! Thursday, 5/16: Tie-Dye Day! (if you ordered an FSP free shirt, you’re all set!) This day is messy!  Please dress you child in clothes that can withstand it Washing instructions will be sent home! Wear your shirt on Field Day!
