October 29, 2018 Homework: Due Friday *u-e comprehension * Home Reading Books Daily *country of origin flag *turkey project *Sight words: review From Where in The World? This week we will begin the social studies unit on People and Places. The children will learn vocabulary words like map, globe, ocean, continent, country and state. This week the children will learn the names of seven continents and four oceans. Watch for the social studies newspapers to come home with your children later in the week. The children will extend this study to learn a little about one of the “countries of origin” of their own families. We will talk about ancestors, traditions and immigrants. Please see letter about this project coming home today. Thinking Mathematically Working with Words In phonics this week we will work with R-controlled vowels, ar, or, ir, ur and er. We are learning a story to help us remember these sounds. Please ask your child about these sounds. High frequency sight words are review. As always, the more you practice these words at home the easier they are for your children to read in books and spell correctly in their writing. There is a monthly sight word list coming home today. Thinking Mathematically This week we will teach students different strategies for subtracting. We will talk about using touch points, counting back, and using a number line. Number lines also known as number paths with ENY. Students are learning to hop backwards. We are also learning to cross out in their word problems when we talk about subtraction to show the things that leave. They will be using number bonds with subtraction as well. The children will be using subtraction to solve word problems. Home Work *Home reading is Monday-Thursday. Please read 20 minutes. *U-e comprehension- Please have students highlight long u words. They should read over the passage multiple times. *Plump and Perky Turkey- Students are disguising a turkey. Please read attached letter for directions. The turkey is due on Friday, November 2nd. *Choose a country of origin and draw the flag of that country for Friday. Please read attached letter. *Continue practicing sight words nightly.

Veteran’s Day Many Room A5 students have parents and extended family who have served our country in the United States Armed Services. We would like to honor you and your family members who have served, with a star in our classroom. Please write or me with the: names of parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts; years of service and branch in which they served. The children will make a star for each. As we enjoy the upcoming holiday, we will all be mindful of those who have given so much that we may celebrate in safety and security. Example: Terry Carter Mrs. Armas’ father US Marines Thinking Mathematically Social Studies This week we will learn about continents and oceans. Students will be learning songs to help them remember the names. Writer’s Workshop In writer’s workshop students have been learning how to bring their stories to life. One way is to unfreeze their characters by adding dialogue. Another way is to tell their story in small steps. We have also learned to add how their characters feel and what they think. We have also been working on using transition words. Dates to remember November 1st- No School November 5- Picture retakes November 8th- Mother/Son dance November 9th-Father/Daughter dance November 12th- No School-Give your veteran a thanks from us Movie Night at the Roxy Wear spirit wear on Fridays -Any Jog-a-thon t-shirt or school spirit wear t-shirt or sweatshirt counts. November Thanksgiving break *Thank you for all your help with the Halloween Party. Our party is from 10:15-11:30. Our parade is at 8:30. Students can wear costumes to school. Remember no weapons. Please see website for specifics regarding costumes. Thank you all so much for coming to the Art Show and all the parents who helped mount, put up the art, and take down the art. It was a wonderful evening.
