Presentation transcript:

RED STATION - Waves 1. How is light transmitted through matter that is translucent? Transparent? Opaque? Light goes through transparent materials, the light is scattered when it goes through translucent materials and it is absorbed by opaque substances 2. What does a concave mirror look like? a convex mirror? (draw and describe) Concave goes in – thinner in the middle. Convex is thicker in the middle and thinner on the edges 3. What does a concave lens look like? a concave lens? (draw and describe) Same idea with lenses instead of mirrors 4. Draw and describe the following light wave interactions? Absorption D Diffraction C Refraction B Reflection A 5. How are mirrors and lenses similar? Different? – The lenses and mirrors are classified by shape A B Concave Convex C D

BLUE STATION - Waves If there are no particles vibrating what happens to sound? – no particles no sound What are the similarities and differences of mechanical and electromagnetic waves? – Both transmit energy – mechanical waves need a medium but electromagnetic waves do not need a medium to travel through What is an example of an electromagnetic wave? light a mechanical wave? water 4. Draw and label a mechanical longitudinal wave? 5. Draw and label a mechanical transverse wave? *mechanical means it goes through a medium but it doesn’t look any different 6. What does a waves frequency tell you about the energy it is transferring? Higher frequency waves have more energy 7. What does a waves wave length tell you about the energy it is transferring? Longer wavelength means lower energy because a longer wavelength would cause a lower frequency

YELLOW STATION - Waves What happens to a wave’s frequency when the wavelength is increased? It decreases What kind of wave interaction is an echo an example of? Reflected sound Why is it that a duck will bob up and down in water, but never makes it to shore? Energy is transferred not the material What is the only thing waves transfer? energy What is the substance that a wave travel through? medium What is the Doppler Effect? (draw and label) What does the speed of sound depend on? The medium it travels through

PINK STATION - Waves How are electromagnetic waves created? The vibration of an electric field and a magnetic field together What is the speed of light in the absence of a medium? (You don’t need to know this) – 300,000 m/s What combine to form white light? All the colors Draw and identify the four different relationships possible between loudness and pitch. Check your “Show me the Wave” page What is constructive interference? The wave interaction that occurs when waves combine and create a wave with a greater amplitude than the individual waves had. What is destructive interference? The wave interaction that occurs when waves combine and create a wave with a smaller amplitude than the individual waves had. What is the tool we can use to separate white light into different colors and what interaction does it use? A prism uses refraction to bend the light waves into their separate wavelengths

PURPLE STATION - Waves What is a lens? A transparent object that forms an image by refracting light What is a mirror? A reflective surface What kind of wave is light? Electromagnetic and transverse What kind of wave is sound? Mechanical and longitudinal What is a mechanical wave? A wave that needs a medium to travel through What is a transverse wave? A wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction of the wave In what process is a rainbow created? Water droplets cause fraction to split the light

Orange Station - Waves Define frequency. The number of waves produced in a given amount of time Define Pitch. Determined by frequency – high or low Define wavelength. Distance from crest to crest or trough to trough Define amplitude. The maximum distance that the particles of a waves’s medium vibrate from the equilibrium point or rest position What is an electromagnetic wave? A wave that does not require a medium to travel How does the pitch of a sound change when an object is moving towards the listener? The pitch goes up How does the pitch of a sound change when an object moving away from the listener? The pitch goes down

GREEN STATION - Waves What is the unit for frequency? hertz What is the unit for loudness? decibels What attribute of a wave determines if a sound’s pitch will be high or low? frequency What attribute of a wave determines if a sound will have high or low volume? amplitude What is the relationship between frequency and wavelength? Inverse – one goes up the other one goes down What are the seven different kinds of electromagnetic waves? (IN ORDER) Radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays, gamma 7. What is a longitudinal wave? A wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate back and forth parallel to the path that the wave moves
