1 Waves Review

2 What are the two things that are not matter?
Do Now What are the two things that are not matter?

3 What is a WAVE? A wave is any disturbance that transfers energy through matter or space. Once the wave has moved, the disturbance is gone. The energy carried by ocean waves can break rocks.

4 The matter through which a wave travels is called a MEDIUM.
How do waves travel? The matter through which a wave travels is called a MEDIUM.

5 Types of Waves

6 Transverse Wave waves in which the particles vibrate in an
up and down motion ex: light waves Transverse Wave highest point rest position not sure? lowest point

7 waves in which the particles vibrate back and forth in compressional pulses
ex: sound waves Longitudinal Wave not sure?

8 Mechanical Waves need a medium to travel through.
Examples of Mechanical Waves: sound water ropes earthquakes Mechanical Waves can be either Transverse or Longitudinal

9 Electromagnetic Waves do NOT need a medium to travel through.
Examples of Electromagnetic Waves: x-rays radio waves infrared radiation microwaves visible light Electromagnetic Waves are ALWAYS Transverse!

10 Properties of Waves

11 Amplitude = wave height
larger amplitude = more energy

12 Wavelength = distance between 2 crests or troughs
shorter wavelength = more energy human eyes can detect electromagnetic waves with a wavelength between 400 and 700 nanometers

13 Frequency = the number of waves that pass by a point each second (Hertz)
higher frequency = more energy

14 Light Waves Extension

15 Consists of changing electric & magnetic fields
Light is a type of energy that travels as an electromagnetic wave. Consists of changing electric & magnetic fields Can travel through empty space or matter

16 Opaque Translucent Transparent
Transmission: Occurs when light waves pass through an object without interacting. Opaque no light Translucent some light Transparent they see everything!

17 Light interacts with matter in different ways:
WAVE DISTURBANCES Light interacts with matter in different ways: Absorption: Occurs when light waves transfer energy into particles of matter. When incoming light hits an object it causes its atoms to vibrate. It then converts the energy into heat which is radiated. Light stops at the object and does not reflect or refract. I can explain when light interacts with matter it is: absorbed, transmitted, refracted or reflected (scattered)

18 Refraction: is the bending of a wave when it changes speed as it travels from one material(medium) to another. The bending of a wave as the wave passes between two substances in which the speed of the wave differs

19 Reflection: Occurs when light waves bounce off of an object.
Bananas appear yellow because the yellow wavelength is being reflected. All of the other colors of light are being absorbed into the bananas.
