Other European Nations Explore Why did they explore? What did it lead to?

Question 1 They searched for their own route or passage to Asia How did other European countries react to Columbus’ discovery?

Question 2 What were the other European countries looking for? Why? The Northwest Passage to Asia Because of the 3 G’s!

What countries sent people to explore?

Question 3 England What countries sent people to explore? Cabot claimed the land that became the 13 colonies. Hudson claimed the Northern parts of Canada

Question 3 Netherlands (Dutch) What countries sent people to explore? Hudson claimed the lands that became New York Minuit founded New York City (New Amsterdam)

Question 4 Why did Europeans start having rivalries with each other? Competing for land, gold, and power: The more colonies that a nation could get meant more power and money for the nation. The Protestant Reformation: a religious divide created when the Catholic Church split into two groups. Catholic nations (Spain and France) began to compete against Protestant (non-Catholic) nations (England and the Netherlands)

Question 5 What did these rivalries lead to in America? Conflicts over land and wars between European nations in America Europeans took as much territory that they could from the Native Americans causing more conflict Trade war, piracy and a constantly increasing slave trade.

What was New France? Where was it and how large did it become?

Question 6 What was New France? Where was it and how large did it become? The French territory in North America that stretched from Canada all the way to Louisiana Economy was based on trading fur with the Indians. Built forts throughout their territory. Governed like New Spain Few French moved there. Slaves were brought in to work near New Orleans. Some became involved in an Indian revolt and gained freedom.

Question 7 What was New Netherlands? Where was it and what did it become (what is it today)? The Dutch territory in North America. It was a small area along the coast that is now New York. The capitol New Amsterdam became New York City. Economy was based on trading fur with the Indians. Diverse (ethnic and religious) groups lived there. Took over New Sweden expanding into present day New Jersey.

More diseases spread leading to the deaths of millions of Natives Different forms of Christianity were spread creating more conflict between Europeans and the Native tribes Trade wars and actual wars!
