2 Throughout the Age of Exploration, Europeans set out to explore the world in search of new routes and access to resources.

3 In 1492, Christopher Columbus’s voyage and discovery of the “New World” encouraged explorers to travel WEST. European explorers used the Atlantic Ocean as a highway for exploration to North America.

John Cabot 1497 England John Cabot explored EASTERN CANADA for England. Cabot’s expeditions proved the existence of a shorter route across the northern Atlantic Ocean, which would promote the establishment of British colonies in North America.

Samuel De Champlain France Samuel de Champlain mapped the GREAT LAKES established the French settlement of QUEBEC. Quebec became the hub for French fur trading. The following summer, Champlain fought a major battle against the Iroquois, cementing a hostile relationship that would last for more than a century.

9 INTERACTIONS between Europeans and Native Americans varied from place to place, sometimes leading to COOPERATION and other times resulting in CONFLICT. Although few Europeans considered Native Americans to be their equals, Europeans sought profit through the trade of resources, and they knew that the native people would be important to their success.
