Do Now What kinds of things do biologists study? 1

Table Discussion What makes something a living thing? Discuss with your table for 2 minutes and come up with a list of characteristics Make sure each characteristic applies to ALL living things 2

Is it Living or Nonliving? For each picture, determine whether or not the object/thing is a living organism Answer these 2 questions for each: Is it a living or nonliving thing? What observations are you basing this on? 3

All living things 1: are organized and complex, 1 or more cells 2: have definite shape, life-span, and limited size 3: reproduce 4: are based on universal genetic code 5: grow and develop 6: obtain and use materials and energy 7: respond to their external and internal environments 8: change over time, as a group 11

1: Organized and Complex with one or more CELLS Single-celled or Multicellular 12

2: Definite shape and life-span with limited size

3: REPRODUCE Asexual or Sexual (1 parent, copying) (2 parents, mixing DNA)

4: UNIVERSAL GENETIC CODE nucleic acid codes translate to amino acids and proteins to determine the inherited traits of organisms 15

5: GROW & DEVELOP life cycles Growth: more cells Development: different cells

Heterotroph vs. Autotroph 6: OBTAIN ENERGY: Heterotroph vs. Autotroph 17

7: RESPOND to External and Internal ENVIRONMENT Organisms maintain homeostasis (using organelles or organ systems)

8: CHANGE OVER TIME As a group, any given kind of organism can evolve, or change over time 19

Stable Internal Environment Habitat Needs of Living Things Water Energy and Materials Stable Internal Environment Habitat 20

Reflection: If you were looking for life on Mars, what would you look for? Why? HW: A virus invades a living cell and uses the cell’s machinery to make more viruses? Is a virus a living thing? Why or why not? (in notes) 21

#2

Do Now Take out your HW and be ready to discuss the virus question with your table. 24

Partner Discussion Are Viruses a living thing? Discuss with your table for 5 minutes Summarize of your ideas and organize them onto the sheet of paper in some way (chart, concept map, you decide!) You don’t have to come up with a clear “yes” or “no” answer 25

Virus Video Takeaways from the video

Life Processes Nutrition - take materials (nutrients) from environment and change them into forms they can use Transport - substances entering and leaving cells Respiration - releasing the chemical energy stored in nutrients Synthesis & Assimilation - combining simple substances into more complex ones. “You are what you eat” Growth - increase in size and develop (cell specialization) Excretion - removal of waste substances

Life Processes continued Regulation - systems of the body work together to maintain homeostasis Reproduction - produce new organisms of their own kind Metabolism - all the chemical reactions happening in an organism How can we test to see if these processes are occurring?

Activity Complete the practice to review the information we’ve covered. You can work together. This is to finish for HW.

Reflection: Why might it be difficult to determine if organisms are undergoing life processes? HW: Go through your notes and highlight any vocabulary words or words that you might need to review 31
