The English Baccalaureate Introduced by the government and covers ‘respected academic subjects’ English Mathematics Science A modern foreign language History or Geography

The English Baccalaureate This combination of subjects does increase future opportunities for students if they can gain a 5 – 9 grade in all of the five areas. It is not compulsory but strongly recommended, particularly for students who are looking to go to university.

Option choices Up to FOUR subjects can be chosen – 1 of which must be History or Geography. Students should not make choices based on friendships or because they happen to like the teacher. 5 or 6 a fortnight??

The subjects Art Computing Science Design and Technology Drama Food and Nutrition Technology French Geography Health and Social Care BTEC History Music Photography Physical Education (Sports Science) Sociology Spanish Textiles Vehicle Technology BTEC

Free choice Students will be given a free choice of subjects. Once all the forms are in we will then work out the best fit for all the students across all of the subjects.

You have to choose History or Geography as one of your Option Choices. Student Name: ______________________________________ Tutor Group: _______________ Please select the FOUR option subjects that you would like to study during Years 10 and 11. They should be picked in order of preference – your favourite subject should go as choice number 1 and so on. You may not get one or more of your four option subjects, so you should also choose TWO reserve subjects that you could take. You need to give careful thought to these as well as you could end up taking them. You have to choose History or Geography as one of your Option Choices. PREFERRED OPTION CHOICES RESERVE CHOICES Option One   HISTORY OR GEOGRAPHY Option Two Option Three Option Four Reserve 1   Reserve 2 Options form ART GCSE HISTORY GCSE COMPUTING SCIENCE GCSE MUSIC GCSE DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY/MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY GCSE DRAMA GCSE PHYSICAL EDUCATION (SPORTS SCIENCE) GCSE FOOD PREPARATION AND NUTRITION GCSE SOCIOLOGY GCSE FRENCH GCSE SPANISH GCSE GEOGRAPHY GCSE TEXTILES GCSE HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE BTEC VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY BTEC EXTENDED CERTIFICATE

Reserve choices Some subjects may not run because not enough students show an interest in taking them. Students will be asked to choose TWO reserve subjects and it is important that these have as much consideration as the first four choices. Should reserve choices be used for your child then you will be contacted by the school.

Be aware It will not be possible to do some subject combinations

You cannot… Study two from Art, Photography, Textiles Pick up a second language Study three from Art, Drama, Music, Textiles and Photography Choose Computing unless you are in Sets 1 or 2 for Maths Pick up a subject that you did not choose for Specialist Studies

You can… Choose History and Geography – 1 in the Humanities Option and 1 from the free choice.

Vehicle Technology This course can only cater for 12 students in a group for safety reasons. The assessment method is different from the other courses with most work being assessed during the two years rather than in the summer of 2021. Any interested students need to write a letter explaining why they wish to take this course. The school will carefully consider these as well as in school data to determine which students this is most suitable for.

Taster sessions Some subjects are new in KS4. Health and Social Care Photography Sociology Vehicle Technology Taster sessions will run for these subjects to help with choices. Sign up sheets will be available outside Mrs Cameron’s office in due course.

Next Steps On Thursday 14 March there will be a Parents’ Evening – 4.30 – 7.00. A chance to talk about progress and achievement in each subject. This will help with the process. Options forms must be completed and handed to the relevant form tutor by Friday 22 March

April 2019 Parents and students will receive a letter confirming option choices.

The rest of the evening You are welcome to visit the options subjects and speak to staff and students to find out more about the course details. Ask questions to find out as much as possible.

Careers Will Crowhurst, our Careers advisor, will be in the library to offer advice and appointments will be arranged in school where necessary. In the Library will be: Farnborough College of Technology, Basingstoke College of Technology, Guildford/Farnham/Merrist Wood Group,

Options process During the options process, students should talk to their tutor, subject teacher, Subject Co-ordinator or a member of the Senior Leadership Team if they require any guidance. They should, of course, also discuss possible choices with you at home.

Next steps Please ensure you have a copy of the options booklet at the end of this presentation before heading off around school. Use the map to find out where the subjects are based.

Thank you for listening and enjoy the rest of the evening.
