Year 9 Options Parents Briefing Evening Wednesday 17th January 2018

3 Vocational (BTECs/ Cambridge Nationals/ CiDA/ TLM)
GCSEs Vocational (BTECs/ Cambridge Nationals/ CiDA/ TLM) Mainly coursework based. At least 1 examined element. The ‘traditional’ route followed. All have a high element of examination and will have the final exam in May/June of Y11. Some subjects may have controlled tests for practical elements.

4 Core Curriculum – All Year 10 students will study these subjects
English Language 2 hours per week English Literature Mathematics 4 hours per week Science 6 hours per week Initially ALL students will follow the same science route. This will be AQA Science Trilogy and comprises of all 3 science (Biology, Chemistry & Physics). During Year 10 students who show exceptional promise will be invited to study separate sciences. Physical Education 1 hour per week

5 English Baccalaureate (EBacc)
To achieve the EBacc you will need to achieve a grade 5 in: Maths English GCSE Sciences History or Geography French or Spanish. There is an increasing importance being placed on EBacc subjects.

6 The E-Route (The vast majority of students will follow this route)
Science Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Option 4 Core + Additional  (During Y10 students who show exceptional promise will be invited to study separate sciences) Geography or History (Both may be taken should the student wish - in options 3 and 4) French or Spanish 2 options to be taken from the subject option list.

7 The S-Route (Some students may follow this route)
Science Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Option 4 Core + Additional (During Y10 students who show exceptional promise will be invited to study separate sciences) One of; Geography History French Spanish Computer Science 2 options to be taken from the full subject option list. 1 option from a limited number of subjects. This list will be available once the students have selected other options to make these the most appropriate to the cohort.

8 The V-Route (Some students will follow this route)
Students following this route are likely to have some time ‘off-site’ at The Kevin Shore Vocational Academy (KSVA) at Vector 31. Level 2 Construction Science Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Core + Additional  (During Y10 students who show exceptional promise will be invited to study separate sciences) Geography History French Spanish Computer Science 2 days at KSVA Engineering or AQA Design and Technology Technical award (This qualification will be decided once the cohort has opted for construction) 

9 The V-Route (Some students will follow this route)
Students following this route are likely to have some time ‘off-site’ at The Kevin Shore Vocational Academy (KSVA) at Vector 31. Level 2 Construction and Engineering Science Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Option 4 Core + Additional  (During Y10 students who show exceptional promise will be invited to study separate sciences) Level 2 in Servicing and Engineering (Motor Vehicle qualification) 1 day at KSVA One of; Geography History French Spanish Computer Science Level 1 TLM (a computer qualification that will be delivered in 1 hour per week) A limited number of subjects will be available. This list will be available once the students have selected other options to make these the most appropriate to the cohort.

Students following this route are likely to have some time ‘off-site’ at The Kevin Shore Vocational Academy (KSVA) at Vector 31. Level 2 Hairdressing Science Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Option 4 Core + Additional (During Y10 students who show exceptional promise will be invited to study separate sciences) Level 2 qualification in Hairdressing ½ day at KSVA One of; Geography History French Spanish Computer Science Level 1 TLM (a computer qualification that will be delivered in 1 to 2 hours per week) 1 option to be taken from the full subject option list.

14 Year 9 Options - The Process
The options process will follow the timeline below; December Careers/options activities in active tutorial. January Information assemblies, Super Learning Day and options subject carousel, Y9 Parents’ Briefing Evening (17 January 2018). February Y9 Parents’ Evening - staff available to discuss options process (22 February 2018). March Interview with a member of the options team where guidance and advice will be given on suitable courses and the options form completed. April/May Options entered into the system and a second interview arranged. June Confirmation to parents and carers which choices students have chosen at the final Y9 Parents evening.

17 FAQs When will I know if my child can take separate sciences?
Will my child be guaranteed my options? Which subjects have ‘setted’ groups? When will it be decided which route my child will follow?

19 CAREERS ADVICE Pupils can attend a careers ‘drop-in’ session every week. Super learning day – visiting speakers from all different walks of life. Active tutorials using Kudos. Pupils can ask for a one-to-one appointment with a youth support worker in school time. Information is available to all parents on the school website, which is accessible from home.

23 Complete a 50 question survey to find out what jobs you would be better suited to.
Find out what careers your favourite subjects can lead to. Explore families of jobs – eg: engineering, advertising, communications, media… Find out about a specific job – eg Occupational therapist, sports journalist etc

25 Some simple guidance It is good to have a balance of subjects eg. not opting for too many subjects of the same type. Seek advice from people who can help – subject leaders and teachers, tutors. Use the school website for guidance. Use parents’ evening on 22nd February to obtain guidance regarding potential and suitability for a course. Start thinking about the foundations of a good CV – voluntary work, work experience, achievements, charity work… etc
