Persuasive edit/revise stages

Thesis = Your clearly stated position Highlight your thesis statement in yellow – Your thesis should be in both your introduction paragraph and your conclusion paragraph (but the wording can vary) If you don’t have a thesis – write one! Some examples: It’s imperative that more austinites recycle more of their solid waste. You should volunteer at a food bank or soup kitchen. Citizens need to help maintain our parks and public spaces and support Keep Austin Beautiful.

Organization The reasons why your audience should agree with your thesis should be clearly stated. Highlight your supporting arguments/ reasons in green.

transitions The reader should be able to easily follow your arguments and evidence because of your use of transition word and phrases. From paragraph to paragraph and also within your paragraphs. Highlight your transition words and phrases in blue.

development The art of persuasion comes from using ethos, pathos, and logos to convince the reader that your thesis is true. Highlight pink the proof that you give as evidence for your thesis and supporting arguments. Evidence is the information you found when investigating your topic – from books, internet, and your interview. Make sure you have a parenthetical source included – what is the source of that fact?

diction One way to convince your readers is to use the appropriate level of language and word choice (diction) as you present your thesis and arguments. Avoid being too casual or intimate and use more formal language. First person point of view and some second person for engaging the reader are appropriate, but be consistent.

sentences Look for sentence variety that enhance the effectiveness of your essay.

Conventions Check and recheck your capitalization, punctuation, and spelling – errors of this type reduce your credibility with the audience. This is a BUSINESS LETTER – make sure you have followed the formatting rules for a business letter.

Business letter form 1” margin, * single space* Times New Roman, size 12, block paragraphs (see right…)
