Lesson 48 Activity 2.26: reading film, day c Late EA1s to tray. 3 days late At top of page Hold onto your HW until later! Lesson 48 Activity 2.26: reading film, day c Purpose -to analyze how an author/director achieves a specific effect -to interpret text by analyzing author’s purpose -to use appropriate closure and summative statements in writing

Be in your home groups books open to page 172 Review your notes and discussions from the last viewing of “Scissorhands” for 4 minutes We will watch scene 13-19 today.

After Viewing… Discuss the questions on page 172 with your home group. Come to a group consensus for each answer Is Edward behaving any differently now than he did before? What is different about the town’s treatment of him? What is the effect of the scene with Kim dancing in the ice crystal? How have her feelings about Edward changed? Why? How has Edward tried to fit in? Why has he failed? What does the “ethics lesson” reveal about Edward?

Analysis of Key Scene Divide up the cinematic techniques at the bottom of 172 amongst your group You will focus on your one cinematic technique in the key scene about to be shown again Take notes of interesting or effective examples of your technique Think about the low-key lighting and backlighting as well as the use of long-shots of Edward from the point of view of the police. Now discuss with your group your findings. Make predictions about the story’s outcome as a group

Analytical Statements Now each of you will create an analytical statement with textual support and reflective commentary about one of the cinematic elements in today’s showing. Today we will work on adding a sentence of closure. Define the following Sentence of Closure: Explanation of Interpretations. (Why is your analysis important?!)

Sentence of Closure Your sentence of closure will come after your reflective commentary and your example of the purpose of the technique Think of your statement like a mathematical equation Cinematic Element + Purpose + Evidence + Commentary = Sentence of Closure Your sentence of closure shows why your analysis is important and brings closure to the subject. Sentence of Closure = Why we care?

Fill in the blanks: analytical statement Tim Burton, in Edward Scissorhands, use _____________________ in order to ____________________________________________. For example, _______________________________ ____________________________________________. _________________________________________________________________________________________._______________________________________________________________________. Cinematic element Achieve what purpose Provide evidence/example from the text to support your topic Reflective commentary Sentence of closure

Fill in the blanks: analytical statement Tim Burton, in Edward Scissorhands, uses In order to For example, A long shot Show the vulnerability When Peg is upstairs in the castle, the long shot makes her look small so that the viewer worries about her safety. of characters. At this point in time, the audience does not know whether or not the castle is a safe place, making it A place that could be dangerous to Peg. She is alone In the castle, and therefore vulnerable to potential dangers. Therefore, we are concerned for Peg and what will happen to her.
