Order Mantodea The mantid group is easily recognizable The body is fairly elongate and slender Long slender mid and hind legs ‘raptorial’ forelegs Long pronotum Triangular head, large eyes Voracious ambush predator Considered very beneficial, prey on pest species Simple metamorphosis

Order Isoptera: Termites What does ‘Iso’ mean? Usually pale white, light brown Winged forms may be nearly black or aurburn Wings are all same size (unlike ants) Have a variety of castes Simple metamorphosis Many beneficial species degrade wood and other scraps Some eat wood used in construction

Huh? No I didn’t forget about the quiz

For Question 3

Order Grylloblattodea: Ice Insects Blattodea… sound familiar? Gryllidae are crickets Very primitive insects, rare, obscure Thin, flattened body Wide spread legs are somewhat distinctive Has cerci Live in cold mountains omnivorous

Order Dermaptera: earwigs Skin wings Rarely fly, may not have wings at all Small order, but widespread and common Flattened body Cerci modified into pincers Mostly scavengers or predators May damage some plants mildly Do not crawl into peoples’ ears to bite them Make very loving mothers

Order Plecoptera: Stoneflies Fold their broad hind wings Rarely fly Long cerci Most cannot feed as adults, similar lifestyle to mayflies Naiads are usually predatory Gills are located at base of thorax, on legs Require very clean water
