Contextualization Workshop Mr. Yoder | AP US History Instructor

Historical Thinking Skill: CONTEXTUALIZATION Historical thinking involves the ability to connect historical developments to specific circumstances in time and place (contextualization), and to BROADER REGIONAL, NATIONAL, or GLOBAL PROCESSES (Contextualization).

Evaluate the extent to which the French and Indian War marked a turning point between Great Britain and the American colonies. Evaluate the extent to which the French and Indian War was a turning point in American History

French & Indian War After the initial establishment of a colonial foothold by the Spanish, other European powers scrambled to seize a piece of the New World for themselves. European rivals would utilize colonies for access to raw materials and to establish trade markets. In the 1700s, English and French settlers each began to expand into the Ohio River Valley in North America. The war that erupted between the British and the French would be global in nature and would have large consequences for each nation.

To what extent did the Mexican American War mark a turning point in the issue over slavery?

Mexican American War After gaining their independence in the Revolutionary War, the United States quickly began to expand their territory westward. With the purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803, land west of the Mississippi River became open for settlement. Supported by the idea of Manifest Destiny, Americans poured into western regions. As these newly acquired territories eventually became states, the issue of slavery’s expansion became incendiary.

Evaluate the extent to which women’s lives changed during the Progressive Era (1890–1920) of U.S. History.

Write to practice! Evaluate major changes and continuities in the social and economic experiences of women and minorities during World War II. Evaluate the extent to which United States participation in the First World War (1917–1918) marked a turning point in the nation’s role in world affairs.

Historical Thinking Skill: CONTEXTUALIZATION Historical thinking involves the ability to connect historical developments to specific circumstances in time and place (contextualization), and to BROADER REGIONAL, NATIONAL, or GLOBAL PROCESSES (Contextualization).

Historical context for primary source analysis Analysis of ‘Historical Context’ for primary sources involves connecting a document to specific historical events or to specific circumstances of time and place. This involves considering the circumstances that have influenced the creation of this document.

Historical context for primary source analysis To place a document within an historical context, consider the following questions: What has just happened? What is on the verge of happening? What proximate or deep-rooted issues are causing this document to be created? Write a sentence which describes the context, explaining how we can better understand the content of the document by placing ourselves in that specific historical circumstance.
