French & Indian War After the initial establishment of a colonial foothold by the Spanish, other European powers scrambled to seize a piece of the New World for themselves. European rivals would utilize colonies for access to raw materials and to establish trade markets. In the 1700s, English and French settlers each began to expand into the Ohio River Valley in North America. The war that erupted between the British and the French would be global in nature and would have large consequences for each nation.

Mexican American War After gaining their independence in the Revolutionary War, the United States quickly began to expand their territory westward. With the purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803, land west of the Mississippi River became open for settlement. Supported by the idea of Manifest Destiny, Americans poured into western regions. As these newly acquired territories eventually became states, the issue of slavery’s expansion became incendiary.
