LCLS Injector System Overview D. H LCLS Injector System Overview D. H. Dowell, SLAC Lehman Review August 10-12, 2004 Injector Performance Requirements Description of the LCLS Injector Facility Accelerator Housing Sector 20 Alcove New Features of the Injector Drive Laser Plan Laser Heater (replaces SC wiggler) Dual RF Feed Coupler Design for Gun and L0-1 Schedule and Budget and Organization Risks and Near Term Plans Summary

LCLS Injector Performance Requirements:

Sector 20 Injector Facility Laser Bay Drive Laser Transport Tube 10 m Laser Heater Accelerators RF Gun UV Launch and Condition.

The LCLS Injector Facility at Sector 20 Local Control Room Storage Personnel and Equipment Access to Injector Laser Room Top View of S20 Alcove Laser Penetration Cathode Lab Side View of S20 Alcove, stairwell and injector off-axis vault Injector

LCLS Injector Configuration Progress Since CD2a: L0-1 Dual Feed RF Design Completed 120 Hz Gun RF Design Nearly Complete Laser Heater Added to Injector =>Replacing SC Wiggler RF Gun Load Lock Transverse RF Cavity Laser Heater DL1 Bend Straight Ahead Spectrometer L0-1 & L0-2 3-m SLAC Sections Gun Diagnostics

S20 Alcove Floor Plan Title I Completed Title II Specifications Released Room & Utilities Sized for 2 Drive Lasers

Drive Laser Architecture and Procurement Laser Design & Acquisition Plan Reviewed Budgetary Quotes Received from 5 vendors Procurement Plan Ready for FY05

LCLS Will Use Part of the Existing High Power RF No procurement of high power RF equipment Waveguide runs established and in design LLRF System in design

Dual Feed RF Gun and Solenoid Request for Information Response from 2 Vendors Dual Feed Design Corrects RF Fields to Second Order Solenoid Design Includes Both Dipole and Quadrupole Field Correctors

Laser Heater System 50 cm 10 cm q  5.7º 10 cm ~120 cm 2 cm Laser heater replaces SC wiggler to suppress beam instabilities Uses a small portion of the drive laser IR beam Cost and Schedule in Baseline Slide compliments of P. Emma

Laser Heater Effect on Beam Laser Heater increases the uncorrelated energy spread from ~5keV to more than 50keV to suppress beam instabilities. Studies show Laser Heater is more effective than SC Wiggler in controlling instabilities. P0 = 2 MW w0 = 400 mm sx  200 mm sy  200 mm Slide complements of P. Emma

Laser-Heater Parameters

Injector Schedule Schedule Coordinated with Shutdowns Over a Year for Injector Commissioning Injector Not on Project Critical Path

Budgeted Cost of Work Scheduled (BCWS) Procurements Mostly in FY05 OPC Shows Commissioning Ramp Up in FY06 & FY07

Injector Organization

Injector Risks Difficulty of achieving 1 micron @ 100 amps Drive Laser spatial and temporal shaping combined with UV conversion Shaping with complete laser system has not been demonstrated Shaper (Dazzler) Experiments at BNL will begin September 1 Spatial shaping + UV conversion planned at ANL Reliable drive laser operation Specify a diode-pumped laser system Reliable gun operation at 120 MV/m Plan for future guns

Plans for next six months Award contract for drive laser Award contract for RF gun system Demonstrate laser shaping with Dazzler and aspheric optics Continue reviewing and engineering designs Begin procuring and fabricating parts

Summary and Conclusions Injector Configuration Finalized Sector 20 Alcove Will be New Construction ~850 sq. ft. for Drive Laser Bay More Space for Cathode Lab Injector Schedule: Installation Plan Tied to Linac Downtimes ~400 days for injector commissioning Design and Procurement Approach: Improve and Re-Use Existing SLAC Designs Utilize Competent Vendors Drive Laser Procurement Plan Established (5 vendors identified) RF Designs Nearly Complete (2 vendors identified) In Process of Building Injector Organization Ready to Begin Long Lead Acquisitions in FY05
