Modeling in Learning Centers: Exploring the concept of living and nonliving. Dr. Christine Purkiss Angelo State University Invited presentation at the National Science Teachers Association, Annual Conference in St. Louis, April 2019.

Modeling in Learning Centers: Exploring the concept of living and nonliving. This presentation is based on an article from Science and Children, July 2018, V.55, #9, pages 47- 55 by Devarati Bhattacharya, Krista L. Adams, & Tammera J. Mittelstet Modified to use in a college senior level elementary science methods class to include a technology application as part of the evaluation.

Modeling in Learning Centers: Exploring the concept of living and nonliving. Main ideas from the article: Learning Centers 2nd grade Making Diagrammatic Models Concept taught Living, Nonliving, Natural, Man-made Differentiation Science methods, college students Added technology, specifically Paper Slide, as part of the evaluation and as an example of diagrammatic models

Creating with Paper Slide Showing what you know with technology

What is Paper Slide? Creative presentation format Uses simple equipment that every classroom or person has A way for students to show what they know or have learned Cooperative learning in small groups – usually triads Self-paced and engaging

How can you use Paper Slide? Teachers or Students in any content area can: introduce a new concept review a concept complete an assessment assignment

How do you make a Paper Slide? Collect your technology materials – need a way to video tape your “slide” – cell-phones, flip cameras, or iPads work great. Get organized – what is your topic or question? Do your research, learn and study about your topic. Write a script – what will you say during the video, write it out – notecards here are great. Create the slides - collect paper to write on, markers, glue, and any other materials Draw each of the slides – visuals are great here Decide on who is doing what – you will need a speaker, a paper slider and a video taker. Practice, practice, practice, your presentation Make a final copy, review it, make changes, re-tape it, turn it in.
