Community Event Twanna Bradford Professor Williams Final Project June 5, 2016

Station 1: Universal Design for Learning Plan As an educator I would get the audience attention by explaining to them one of the UDL plans which would be the “multiple means for representation”. I will give them a brief view of describing how this UDL plan would benefit from the population of students or pre-k- through 12 th grade. I would also explain to the audience how this plan for technology to be integrated into the classroom would also be efficient for children that have some type of learning disability.

Station 1: Universal Design for Learning According to Wideman & Odrowski the multiple means of representation which is based on allowing students to make connections within, as well as between concepts”(2012). Also it states that “there is not one means of representation that is optimal for all learners; providing options for representation can improve the learning opportunity in your course( National Center on Universal Design for Learning, 2012).. Basically when information is presented to students, they will have the opportunity to present what they have learned or what they are learning in not only just one form of learning. For example, if students are doing an assignment on reading a story, there are other ways that they can comprehend what is being learned in multiple ways. If they are having a hard time understanding the book, they can use another form of technology to help them with the assignment. According to the article “reading requires pattern recognition, decoding, and comprehension”(Wideman & Odrowski).

Station 1: Universal Design for Learning Resources for Students: Gives students the opportunity to work on computers, iPad, iPod, E-Readers or different type of technology. Motivate Students: Students are able to collaborate in small groups to work together on different assignments which enhances their self esteem and motivates them to take control of their own education. It also gives them more hands-on experience. Students can learn at their own pace. Students are able to work independently at their own pace so that they can be enthused and excited about going to school. This also allows them to prepare them for other assignments or lectures and students are given more time if they need to finish up their assignments.

UDL: Evolution of technology Students will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other students in positive way so that they can motivate each other. Technology has a positive impact on student learning. It’s a way for students to be more engaged; thus, students often retain more information that is presented to them. It also provides meaningful learning experiences. Technology can be implemented into the classroom environment so that it can be integrated into all school curricular areas, including mathematics, reading, science, and social studies any other academic subjects. The audience will have the opportunity to explore with some of these technology tools.

Station 2: Technology and UDL for All Learners According to Illinois state department of education their mission for implementing assistive technology into the classroom environment is to “provide the supports necessary to allow students with disabilities to increase or maintain their performance on a variety of tasks within the school settings” (Illinois department of education, (2012).

Examples of Digital and Assistive technology to support diverse learners Assistive listening: “supports that help a student who is either deaf or has a hearing loss” (Assistive Devices, learning disabilities…PBS, n.d.). Hearing aids Amplifiers Captions on TV Typing telephones Augmentative/Alternative Communication: “supports that allows a child who can not speak, or whose speech is not understood by others to communicate” (Assistive Devices. Learning disabilities…PBS,n.d.). Picture boards Voice output communication devices and software

Examples of Assistive Technology Visual Aids: “supports that give students a visual difficulties access to information” (Assistive device learning disabilities…pbs, n.d). Large print books Books on tape Magnifiers Talking computer software Brailers Mobility: “Equipment that allows a student with a physical or visual disability to move independently and safely through the community” (Assistive Device Learning Disabilities…PBS, n.d.) Wheel chairs Adapted bicycles Wheelchairs

3 Ways Technology Influence Student Independence Preparing students for the future: Students are able to enhance their technology skills so that they can be successful in life. Inspiring collaboration: Students can build positive relationships by collaborating with other students to get help with their classwork or homework by researching or bringing different resources. Promoting learning opportunities: Students always have some type of technology that they use on a daily basis so when the teacher is giving an assignment, students can research using their mobile devices in their daily lives.

Station 3: 21 st century skills Acquisition and Employability Today in the 21 st century games are being integrated into the classroom environment. Technology comes in many different forms from computers to smart boards. Even though research has said that children benefit from using different types of technology. One way to effectively integrated technology into the classrooms is by incorporating the technology into the overall curriculum. According to Wardle (2008), “ Is not to teach the children how to use a computer but the appropriate use of technology is to expand, enrich, implement, individualize, differentiate and extend the overall curriculum”. (Wardle, 2008). Using different technology in the classroom will enhance the children learning. Integrating games into the curriculum in the classroom is a way for students to learn how to how to be creative with their work so that they can utilized their effectively. There some positive benefits of adding games to the classroom.

21 st Century Skills Acquisition Employability The UDL will be demonstrated by providing the community with a list of free applications that they can download on their phones, computers other technology tools. I will also give examples of some of the games that I have integrated into my classroom environment. Applications like IMovie where the students can make an movie on the computer using this application. This learning principle can be implemented by having students make connections and understanding about what they are learning. Because students come from different cultural back rounds and have differences about what they are learning, it has to be introduced in different ways that is conducive to the student
