1 Pitman’s Reading Strategy For articles, sections of a textbook, or other reading material Presented by Robin Manning Hays High School, Buda, Texas

2 Main Idea Students work in groups to process a reading selection

4 Procedure Teacher selects readings – One page articles work well – Longer selections can be divided into several pieces, with each group reading a different piece of the article For example, a long reading on Buddhism could be divided into sections such as Origin, Spread, Beliefs, Current Practices Divide class into groups of 3 students

5 Process Give each group their reading, a large piece of paper for the poster, and colored markers Students read the article and prepare the poster

6 The Poster Suggestions for information to collect includes – Summary or main idea – Who is the article about – What is the article about – Where does it take place – Important facts – Information specific to the reading For example, if the article is about the past, a section on When would be appropriate to include

7 Students highlight the information in the article then summarize it on the poster Glue or tape the article to the center of the poster

8 Sharing What They’ve Learned After the groups complete their posters, they can take turns presenting OR Posters can be hung on the wall and students do a “gallery walk” – Students walk around the room reading the information on the posters, and taking notes – Note-taking can be done on their own paper, or the teacher can create a worksheet so students collect specific information
