OUR SOLAR SYSTEM The inner planets are the closest to the sun. A planet is a large object that orbits a star. The inner planets are the hottest planets.

THE SUN The sun is one of the hottest stars in space. The Sun’s surface is cooler than the rest of the sun.

MERCURY Mercury is an inner planet. Mercury is about the size of Earth’s moon.

VENUS Venus is the same size as Earth. Venus’s surface is made up of volcanoes.

EARTH The Earth is the largest inner planet. Earth is the only planet to have life.

MARS Mars is called the red planet. Mars looks like a red ball of fire.

ASTEROID BELT The asteroid belt is the barrier between the inner and outer planets.

JUPITER Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. Jupiter has 63 moons at least.

SATURN Saturn has rings that are visible. Saturn has 31 moons total.

URANUS Uranus is a gas giant. Uranus rotates on its side.

NEPTUNE Neptune is the windiest planet Neptune has 13 moons.

PLUTO Pluto has a rocky surface. From the surface of Pluto the sun looks like any other star.

GALAXY Our Milky Way galaxy has two main arms. There is more than 1,000 galaxies in the universe.

CONSTELLATIONS It is like dot to dot in the sky. Constellations are stars that look like anything you think. It is like dot to dot in the sky.

UNIVERSE There is actually a telescope that takes pictures of the universe.

MOON PHASES The moon has cycles called moon phases. When you can’t see the moon that is called a new moon.

COMETS Comets are made out of frozen gases. Comets are bigger than some planets.
