Nationalism, Sectionalism and Compromise

Nationalism: Pride in your nation

Sectionalism: pride and loyalty in the region or section of the country where you live rather than the nation as a whole

Developed by Henry Clay American System Developed by Henry Clay (he was a politician known as the “Great Pacificator” because he arranged compromises between so many other politicians)

National bank so that Americans would use the same kind of money Protective tariff which made American goods less expensive than European goods National bank so that Americans would use the same kind of money Improve transportation for trade

The problem: Missouri Compromise People living in Missouri wanted to become a state The problem: they wanted their state to allow slavery

Missouri Compromise At the time their were an even number of slave states and free states (11 of each) The balance of power would shift to those states which allowed slavery There were an equal number of slave and free states.

Maine (formerly part of Massachusetts) would become a free state Missouri would become a slave state All new states above the latitude line 36 / 30 would be free, below would allow slaves
