Virginia Company of London Settled in northern part of Virginia 1607 established Jamestown (1st permanent English settlement) by John Smith at the mouth of the James River in Chesapeake Bay Located in a swamp Had mosquitoes Settlers got sick from water

John Rolfe introduced tobacco to them in 1612 and helped the settlement survive 1619 Virginia House of Burgesses created-1st example of a representative government in North America (people select others to make decisions)

VIRGINIA COMPANY OF PLYMOUTH Pilgrims (Puritans/Separatists) left Europe b/c they were seeking religious freedom Arrived in 1620 in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and established Plymouth

Signed the Mayflower Compact (1st example of self-government) They agreed to make and follow their own laws
