Classifying Matter

What is matter? Matter = anything that has mass and takes up space What are some examples of matter?

Two Categories of Matter Mixtures – Contain more than one kind of matter Substances – Contain one or more kinds of matter but they can not be separated by physical means

Types of Mixtures Homogeneous mixtures – Uniformly mixed- All samples have the same proportion of ingredients Heterogeneous mixtures – Different samples may have different proportions of ingredients

Types of Substances Compounds – Contain more than one kind of matter Elements – Contain only one kind of matter

Types of Matter

Law of Conservation of Matter The Law of Conservation of Matter states that in an isolated system Matter can not be created or destroyed it can only be changed from one form to another.
