1 Chapter 2 Section 1 Describing matter

2 Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
Substance is a single kind of matter that is pure, with specific make up. Every form of matter has two kinds of properties- Physical Properties and Chemical Properties.

3 Physical Properties are properties of a substance that can be observed without changing it to another substance. Chemical Properties property of a substance that describes its ability to change to another substance. Element is a pure substance that has its chemical and physical properties. Atoms is a basic particle from which all elements are made.

4 When two atoms combine they form a chemical bond.
Molecule Group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds. When elements are chemically combined, they form compounds having properties that are different from those of the uncombined elements.

5 A mixture is made up of two or more substances.
Each substance in a mixture keeps its individual properties. Also, the parts of a mixture are not combined in a set ratio. Homogenous Mixtures are evenly mixed mixtures that you cannot see the different parts. Example solutions. Heterogeneous Mixtures you can see the different parts
