DiscNW Youth Summit September 15, 2013 Phinney Neighborhood Center

Summer Camps Overview Seattle Youth Ultimate Camps have been in operation for 10 years All camps take place at Magnuson Park in Seattle Sessions run from 9am-3pm, Monday through Friday 914 campers attended in 2013, an increase of 16% from 2012 Players aged 8-19 are served; the age group is consistently the largest DiscNW Youth Summit 2013 Seasonality 2013 Budget Impact Revenues: $231K Expenses: $123K Financial aid: ~$16K Organizational Requirements 2 Camp Directors, ~50 counselors, athletic trainers, and DiscNW staff members work on camp planning and operation Equipment for camps is stored in the locker and onsite at Magnuson: cones, pinnies, discs As a result of many years of work, regular management of the camps is relatively smooth, though it does require a lot of manpower Spring Registration opens Summer 2 June sessions,1 in August Fall Reporting and planning for next year Winter No events Discussion Questions Camps are currently offered only in Seattle. Should we offer more geographic variety? Day camps are easier to run and more profitable. Should we manage overnight camps? Not many high school and elite players attend. Is this a problem? Inexperienced ultimate players often struggle to adjust. How important is it to create a new player curriculum? What should be the primary goal of camps? Profitability, which allows us to implement other youth programming? Or outreach to new players and communities?

Clinics & Learning Overview We discontinued Moho due to declining interest Free summer camps are organized in south Seattle for underserved players USA Ultimate Coaching Clinics are offered annually We support AGE UP and new teams by providing grant money Changes to the summer club leagues are intended to support more learning DiscNW representatives regularly attend AAHPERD conferences The Riot Clinic serves girls and women players DiscNW Youth Summit 2013 Seasonality 2013 Budget Impact Revenues: ~$4K Expenses: ~$8K Financial aid: N/A Organizational Requirements Leadership from the DiscNW Director of Youth Operations Experienced coaches Field space in prime locations at desirable times Communicating new opportunities to players Spring No events Summer Outreach camps, Riot Clinic, club leagues Fall AAHPERD Conference Winter USAU Coaching Clinic Discussion Questions Besides camps and clinics, what other learning opportunities should be provided? Is it best for DiscNW to organize learning activities, or should DiscNW support other groups to do it (AGE UP, RiseUP)? Are adequate resources provided to coaches so that they can promote learning at the team level? For which groups (ages, locations, etc.) is it most important to provide learning opportunities? What experience levels?

Spring Reign Overview Spring Reign is a flagship event for DiscNW and is the largest youth ultimate tournament in the world The event takes place annually in Burlington, WA 2 day tournament for coed HS & MS teams, 1 day for coed ES teams 90+ teams play each year About 12 teams are waitlisted and are not accepted More than half of the teams are from Seattle; other teams are from BC, OR, ID, MT, and MB Spirit of the Game is emphasized, teams exchange gifts after games DiscNW Youth Summit 2013 Seasonality 2013 Budget Impact Revenues: $48.1K Expenses: $34.2K Financial aid: ~$3.2K Organizational Requirements DiscNW staff, several Tournament Directors, 60+ volunteers, athletic trainers Lots of equipment from the locker Vendor support for merchandise, food Management of Spring Reign is improving every year, but it still takes a tremendous amount of work Spring Tournament held on 3 rd weekend of April Summer Recap and debrief Fall N/A Winter Planning begins and registration opens Discussion Questions What aspects of Spring Reign could be improved? What are the most important things about the tournament that should be preserved? How can we make the Saturday evening entertainment more exciting? Is the format appropriate for youth players? Should we split the event (different sites or weekends) in order to invite more teams? No teams from outside of Seattle play in the ES Division. Is it still worth having that age group at Spring Reign?

Small Tournaments & Jamborees Overview Finding the right format and timing for smaller tournaments and jamborees has been a challenge Some events have been discontinued: Green Games, WA Games Some are managed by other groups: WA States, Fall Drizzle, Up Dawg, Seattle Invite Spring Jam started as a high school event but is now offered for elementary school teams DiscNW Youth Summit 2013 Seasonality 2013 Budget Impact (Spring Jam only) Revenues: $800 Expenses: $500 Financial aid: $0 Organizational Requirements DiscNW staff, several Tournament Directors, lots of volunteers Lots of equipment from the locker Field space in or close to Seattle Hat events are tricky to manage and require DiscNW to hire team coaches Recruiting enough teams at the same skill level makes team events challenging Spring Spring Jam Summer No events Fall No events Winter No events Questions Is there demand for more small tournaments and jamborees? How can DiscNW determine the best format, timing, location, and skill level for a new event? Is it best for DiscNW to organize small tournaments, or should DiscNW support other groups to do it (college teams, school ADs, Vancouver Ultimate)?

Grab Bag Overview This option is for anything about youth ultimate in Seattle Possible topics include Coaching Fundraising Playing opportunities outside of Seattle Other school based play: PE classes, recess & after school games Youth specific pickup games Eligibility rules Liability and risk management Establishing better relationships with school administrators DiscNW Youth Summit 2013 Seasonality 2013 Budget Impact Revenues: $? Expenses: $? Financial aid: $? Organizational Requirements DiscNW staff TBD Spring - Summer - Fall - Winter - Questions What do other ultimate organizations do that DiscNW does not? What are some challenges that teams face and how can we address those? What are some challenges that players face and how can we address those? What do other sports organizations do that DiscNW does not? How could the DiscNW website better serve the youth ultimate community?

Youth Leagues Seattle youth ultimate began with a middle school league in Leagues continue to be an important part of DiscNW youth programming.
