1 2013-2014 CAPITAL GEOGRAPHIC RUGBY UNION PRESIDENT’S REPORT AUGUST 24, 2014

2 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS MAC CHAMPIONS

3 Goals Stated goals: Communication – provide clear details on competition; direct communication to/for clubs; event promotion; President’s email; Facebook; email/website Relationships – Working with MAC and EPGU All-Star Program

4 Goals Referee Development Player Development Coach Development Game of the week broadcast Membership to sport convention/trade show

5 Goals Communication goals were reached. Relationships are strong with MAC and EPGU. MAC committee is a stand alone with no crossover of committee members All-Star Program – supported D.C. Elite 7s. Will have men’s and women’s 15s in year two Referee Development – fell short. Not enough initiative from leadership (me). Still very, very important.

6 Goals Player Development – Not achieved. Needed to wait a budget cycle Coach Development – Not Achieved. Need to wait a budget cycle Game of the week Broadcast – Not achieved. Membership National Organization – National Association of Sports Commissions and Connect Sports. Looking into pricing

11 Survey Continued Your suggestions: -Better trained refs for D2 women -Player/coach Development – how to recruit overseas coaches (visas/how to) -Reinstate Select Sides -Ref recruitment. Novelty touch leagues -better referee collaboration particularly in regards to women’s competition

12 Your suggestions -Enforce promotion and relegation in D1, D2, D3 and D4. Increase incentives/pay for referees to supplement referee society support (whatever it takes to get more referees and increase overall consistency and quality of game). Create GU all- star clubs for every level of play, including senior men. Provide selects experience for as many players as possible. Provide international competition options for member clubs, hosting and travelling.

13 Your suggestions -Promote grass roots rugby -Mandatory B side matches -improve sponsorship/awareness -Grow the sport -unified effort to get better playing fields throughout the Union -Create Capital Championship -Serevi Camp -All Star including funding -Own Virginia youth -Coaching/High performance camp/trophy -USA Coaching clinic -U14 program in Hampton Roads

14 Next Year Serevi Camp – coaching and player camp At least two broadcast (internet) matches Create Capital Cup 15s and 7s Tournament. 7s will be an invitational to play Washington D.C. Elite Create member led committees – sponsorship, marketing, high performance – with clear objectives and direction Create some budget relief to increase funding to championship teams Assist clubs with national tournament bids
