The Periodic Table

Organizing the Elements In 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev organized the known elements into a table based on their properties and atomic masses.

The Modern Periodic Table Arranged in order of increasing atomic number. Properties of elements change in a periodic fashion from left to right across a period.

The Periodic Table Elements in each group have similar properties. The columns are called groups. Group numbers 1 18 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 2 13 14 15 16 17 The rows are called periods. 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 Period numbers Elements in each group have similar properties.

Group 1 elements are called the alkali metals.

Group 2 elements are called the alkaline earth metals.

Group 16 elements are called the oxygen group.

Group 17 elements are called the halogens.
