Difficulties During Adolescence Teen Depression and Suicide Why has suicide among teens tripled in the last 30 years? One demographic group has the highest suicide rate: White wealthy teenage males. Lack of COPING SKILLS is the key.

Teen Suicide 3rd leading cause of death for people age 15-24 4th leading cause of death for people 10-14. 5,000 adolescents (age 15-24) commit suicide each year. 18 people kill themselves daily. 1,500 others try and fail. Every 100 minutes a teenager commits suicide.

Teen Suicide 69% of suicides involve guns. 60% of high school students say they have thought about killing themselves. Four times as many men than women commit suicide- But 3 times as many women attempt it. 80% of people who commit suicide talked to someone about it first.

Myths and Facts about Suicide People kill themselves because they are under unendurable emotional pain. The reason is not important. Suicide does not happen without warning. The goal of suicide is to seek a solution to one’s problems- not to die. Most suicidal people are NOT mentally ill. Most people want to do it privately, not for attention. Not everyone who is unhappy is suicidal.

Eating Disorders Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Affects mostly girls. Usually results from distorted body image, lack of self esteem, and a need to be in control over something.

Classwork: Make an informational pamphlet for parents with teenage children about one of these topics: eating disorders, teen depression and/or teen suicide. Include causes, symptoms, and how to help. Must have a cover page.
