Objectives: -Explain why it is important to identify and treat clinical depression. -Explain why individuals might deliberate to injure themselves. -Describe one major risk factor for suicide.

Chart on pg. 94 What relationship is there between risk of depression & how connected teens feel to their schools? -What could make someone feel very connected to school? -What could make someone feel disconnected? What needs to change to help students feel more connected?

Clinical Depression -It is normal to feel depressed now & then. Those feelings lift after a few days or weeks and you get on with your life. What if the feeling lingers?

Clinical Depression -individuals may feel sad & helpless for months -unable to enjoy activities that were once a source of pleasure. -challenged to accomplish daily tasks.

Recognizing Depression -Mental Health experts use the symptom list on pg. 95 Signs of Clinical Depression for diagnose. -someone with Clinical Depression will experience four or more of the symptoms nearly every day for at least two weeks. -one out of 10 teens will experience Clinical Depression before they are 18.

Risk Factors Depression sometimes seems to arrive “out of the blue,” but there are often explanations. -A parent or other close biological relative with a mood disorder -A major life change or a prolonged stressful situation --Being the victim of a violent crime or witnessing violence -A previous bout of depression -A sense of hopelessness

Treatment for Depression -medication helps to restore normal brain function (neurotransmitters) -working with Therapists to develop coping skills

Self-injury -Cutting -Burning Self-injury is an unhealthy way to cope with emotions, stress, or traumatic events -Issue of control- trying to feel better Self-injury can be a symptom of a Mood Disorder, Anxiety Disorder or Eating Disorder.

Self-injury -The behavior may begin as an unplanned impulsive act, but it often turns into a compulsion.

Welcome to DoSomething.org, one of the largest orgs for young people and social change! Nearly 30,000 Americans commit suicide every year. In the U.S., suicide rates are highest during the spring. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for 15 to 24-year-olds and 2nd for 24 to 35-year-olds. On average, 1 person commits suicide every 16.2 minutes. Each suicide intimately affects at least 6 other people. About 2/3 of people who complete suicide are depressed at the time of their deaths. Depression that is untreated, undiagnosed, or ineffectively treated is the number 1 cause of suicide. There is 1 suicide for every 25 attempted suicides. Males make up 79% of all suicides, while women are more prone to having suicidal thoughts. 1 in 65,000 children ages 10 to 14 commit suicide each year. There are 2 times as many deaths due to suicide than HIV/AIDS. Over 50% of all suicides are completed with a firearm.

Risk Factor Is there a connection between depression & suicide? -previous suicide attempt or a family history of suicide -having both a mental disorder & a substance abuse disorder -feeling of hopelessness or isolation -lack of access to mental health treatment -being influenced by the suicide of family members, peers or celebrities.

Protective Factors: If a person is at risk for suicide, are there some factor that can help reduce the risk? Cluster Suicides: -A series of suicides that occur within a short period of time in the same peer group or community
