Facts about Suicide Worldwide, there are more deaths due to suicide than to accidents, homicides, and war combined. Over 34,000 people in the U.S. die from suicide every year. Currently, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the united states. Everyday, approximately 95 Americans take their own life and 2,370 more attend to do so. Firearms are the most frequent method of suicide among adults in the united states.

Facts about Suicide Alcoholism is a factor in about 30% of all suicide deaths. Over 4,000 people aged 15-24 die by suicide each year in the united sates. 20% of American high school students reports having seriously considered suicide during the previous 12 months. 8% of high school students actually make a suicide attempt.

Depression More American adults suffer from depression than coronary heart disease(7 million), cancer(6 million), and AIDS(200,000) all combined. There are many symptoms of depression, including: Sadness or “down” mood Loss of interest of pleasure in usual activities Poor appetite or overeating Trouble falling asleep or having little energy Feeling of worthlessness or guilt Trouble concentrating Being fidgety or restless Thoughts of being better off dead or hurting yourself

Health Triangle Mental/emotional:your friends will miss you if you commit suicide, and your family wont know a thing of what to do. Physical:any of your peers or family could want to hurt themselves in a really bad way. Social: you wont be able to see your friends or family in any of the activities you have been in.

Emotions When a teen commits suicide, everyone is affected. Family members, friends, teammates, neighbors, and sometimes even those who didn’t know you well might experience feelings of grief, confusion, guilt, and the sense that if only they had done something differently, the suicide could have been prevented. So its important to understand the forces that can lead teens to suicide and to know how to help.

About teen suicide The reasons behind a teens suicide or attempted suicide can be complex. Although suicide is relatively rare among children, the rate of suicides and suicide attempts increases tremendously during adolescence.

Warning signs Suicide among teens often occurs following a stressful life event, such as a perceived failure at school,a breakup with a boyfriend or girlfriend, the death of a loved one, a divorce, or major family conflict. A teen who is thinking about suicide might: Talk about suicide or death in general Talk about “going away” Pull away from friends or family Having trouble concentrating or thinking clearly Experience changes in eating or sleeping habits
