The Struggle for North America Section 6.3 Pages 212-219

The First Colonies 1) It became clear that North America would not yield vast treasure nor a Northwest Passage, a water route to Asia through present-day Canada 2)  In the early 1600’s the English developed two settlements along the eastern coast of North America. These British southern colonies consisted of Maryland, Virginia, Carolinas, and Georgia.

The First Colonies 3)Jamestown was the colony established in Virginia in 1607. 4) What group of English settlers arrived in 1620 and settled the Plymouth colony? What were they later known as? The Puritans arrived in 1620 and later became known as the Pilgrims.

Other Settlers Arrive 5) The Mayflower Compact later became a founding principle of the US government. 6) Eastern Canada and the St. Lawrence River became known as New France. 7) Samuel de Chaplain and Robert de La Salle are both French explorers. Choose one and discuss how they helped build the lands of New France. Chaplain – traded with Natives, founded Quebec LaSalle – founded Gulf of Mexico, named area Louisiana

European New Colonies New France – claimed by Cartier for France, conquered by America through Treaty of Paris 17643 New Jersey – 1st permanent Dutch settlement, Bergen (now Jersey City) New Netherland – 1647 capital of New Amsterdam (now NYC) Parts of NY, NJ, RI, CT, PA New Sweden – New Swedish Co 1638, later captured by Dutch, near DE

The Growth of the English Colonies 9) By the 1600’s, most of the settlers arriving in North America came from England. Of these many were indentured servants, poor immigrants who paid for passage by agreeing to work for a period of time. 10) Virginia became the first economic success story in the colonies because its rich soil was perfect for crops. 11) List two things that were important to New England’s economy: fish, shipbuilding, trade 12) List two things that the Middle Atlantic colonies had that helped with their economy: soil, water, gentle climate, agriculture, lumber, shipbuilding, trade 13) List two crops the Southern colonies grew: tobacco, rice, indigo, cotton

The French and Indian War 14) Using the image on page 218, list two effects of the French and Indian War: settlement moves westward, colonies protest taxation w/o representation, a revolution has begun, France loses colonies, and more 15) The French and Indian War lasted from 1754 to 1763. This war touched off the Seven Years’ War, which spread to Europe, India, and Africa. 16) The Treaty of Paris ended the Seven Years’ War and was an agreement between which four countries: England, France, Spain, Portugal
