2 TEKS 8C: Calculate percent composition and empirical and molecular formulas. Tribal council meeting of a Woodland Native American tribe. The council has been convened to decide the tribe’s response to the growing conflict between the English and the French in North America. There will be 3 groups: Woodland Tribe English French You will have 10 minutes to read pages 120-124 and put together an argument or presentation on your view of the growing conflict between the 3 groups (10 points). You will have 5 minutes to make a presentation of your group’s views (10 points). All 3 groups will work together for 5 minutes to resolve your differences (5 points). You will receive a grade as a group so take this seriously!

French exploration – Jacques Cartier – eastern Canada exploration. Jesuits and other missionaries Furs, trapping, and fishing (with help of Native Americans) Late 1600s – King Louis XIV of France wanted to strengthen power and revenue. By 1700s French forts, missions, and trading posts stretched from Quebec to Louisiana.

Continued to search for a northwest passage to Asia – no success. 1600’s English focused on establishing colonies along the Atlantic seaboard. 1607 – Jamestown – Survivors had help from the Native Americans. They learned to cultivate tobacco from them. 1620 – Pilgrims landed at Plymouth. Before coming ashore they signed the Mayflower Compact. Dreamed of finding riches like Spanish gold and silver. Created wealth by using surroundings such as growing grain, rice, tobacco.

French – Canada and central United States Spanish – Texas and Florida English and Dutch – Colonies along East Coast Native Americans – Played each against each other.

The settlement was organized by an English company hoping to gain wealth from the New World. Many early settlers died of starvation. Jamestown began to thrive once the colonists started growing and exporting tobacco. England established colonies along the Atlantic seaboard in the 1600s.

Though their hopes for gold or passage to Asia were not met, they did turn profits in their new domains. By 1700, the two nations controlled vast parts of North America. Their colonies were very different from those in Spanish America. How did European struggles for power shape the North American continent?

Jacques Cartier explored the coastline in 1534 and discovered the St. Lawrence River. French missionaries followed the explorers, attempting with little success to convert Native Americans to Christianity.

The first permanent French settlement was not founded until 1608. Farming was hard in the cold Canadian climate, so many settlers became fur trappers and traders.

He sent more settlers and soldiers to North America. However, he forbade Protestants from settling in New France. Louis XIV wanted to increase revenues from New France in the 1600s.

22 TEKS 8C: Calculate percent composition and empirical and molecular formulas. They were English Protestants who rejected the Church of England. Seeking religious freedom, they set sail from Plymouth, England, in the Mayflower. The Pilgrims arrived in present-day Massachusetts in 1620.

People in New England built fishing, timber, and shipbuilding industries. Those in the middle colonies grew grain. Settlers in the South grew cash crops such as rice and tobacco and developed a plantation economy.

This grew out of English tradition in which both Parliament and the rights of citizens tempered the power of the king. Colonists expected the same rights as freeborn English citizens. Each colony had its own representative assembly that advised the royal governor appointed by the king.

28 TEKS 8C: Calculate percent composition and empirical and molecular formulas. The French and Indian War erupted between them in 1754. The two main rivals were France and England. European powers in North America began to fight in the 1600s to protect their interests—and to expand them.

The tide turned in 1759 when British troops captured Quebec, the capital of New France. In 1763, the Treaty of Paris officially ended the war and established British dominance in North America. However, France regained sugar-producing islands in the Caribbean and slave-trading outposts in Africa that the British had seized during the war. The French and Indian War was part of a worldwide conflict known as the Seven Years’ War.
