The PowerPoint will be available on my website and Google Classroom if you need to review it. HW- Family Tree

CW- Regional Differences of the 13 Colonies (New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies). Read (stop at the end of the 2nd paragraph on 74). As you read each section, start identifying what made them unique. Complete the Tree Map and reading (20 minutes). The last 10 minutes of class, start drawing symbols to represent the different ideas on the back. HW- Family Tree

We will be reviewing information that will be setting the table for the start of the United States as a country. Place information that answers the question for each.

8 How many Native Americans lived in North and South America before Europeans arrived to the New World? Hunter-gatherers came across a land bridge from Asia to present day Alaska. Between Million Native Americans lived in two thousand distinct cultures in the Americas.

9 Christopher Columbus: Where did Columbus land when he arrived in the New World?
In 1492, he landed in the islands of the Caribbean. (He never set foot in the land of the United States.) His discovery led to colonization and conquest of the Americas.

10 What was the name of the passage many explorers set out to find?
The Northwest Passage. A water route that would lead to Asia by heading North of America. It does not exist (too much ice).

11 1. What are the 3 main reasons for colonization?
The 3 G’s The countries and explorers wanted to gain the lands for three key reasons: Gold= $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ (Riches) God- spread religion and Christianity Glory- fame.

12 Big “3”- England, France and Spain
2. Who were the 3 Main countries to colonize the Americas? Why did these “Big 3” race to the Americas? Big “3”- England, France and Spain England- established the 13 colonies on the East Coast of North America. Spain- had the most land from Texas to California, as well as Mexico, Central and South America. France- claimed Canada as well as the Mississippi River Valley.

The French controlled land in North America from Canada down through Louisiana.

3. What was the first permanent English settlement in the New World? When was it founded? First permanent English settlement was Jamestown, Virginia (1607). Came for opportunity. Successful with the help of John Smith. Reasons for colonization and challenges (Jamestown video – History Channel)

European diseases killed off between 64 and 85 million Native Americans. Diseases like small pox were devastating to the natives who had to immunity to illnesses that were new to them.

5. What new crop did the Jamestown settlers discover that would become the #1 cash crop of the English colonies? The cash crop in the English colonies was tobacco.

22 10. What was the name of the trade routes that brought slaves to the Americas?
The Triangular Trade was an exchange of goods from Europe, Africa and the Americas. The voyage from Africa to the Americas was called the Middle Passage.

23 The Africans were more immune to European diseases.
What were two reasons that Africans were preferred as slaves over Native Americans? The Africans were more immune to European diseases. There were many of them that were captured from Africa, and when they were brought to the Americas, they had no where to run.
