CERCA Argumentative Structure With Cornell Notes Practice

How do I take Cornell notes? Why should I use Cornell notes? I fold my paper over one-third and then write questions or topics on the left-hand side and answer the question on the right-hand side. Taking notes this way allows you to fold the answers back and quiz yourself or someone else.

A claim is something you try to prove as you make an argument A claim is something you try to prove as you make an argument. It usually answers a question. A salad bar should be offered during lunch. A salad bar should not be offered during lunch. What is a claim? How could I write a claim for the question “Should a salad bar be offered during lunch?”

What is evidence? How do I quote things from a text? Evidence is words or ideas from a text that helps to prove your point. In the text, it says “blah blah blah” (Author’s Last Name Page #). In the text, it says “The sun did not shine” (Seuss 1).

What is reasoning? How important is my reasoning? Reasoning is where you use your own words to explain how the evidence you found in the text proves your point. Your reasoning is the most important part of your argument. It’s where you use your voice to express your opinion.
