1 Writing Response Vocabulary

2 Analyze In your response, the text must be broken down and the parts examined and discussed.

3 Cite In your response, you must give credit to the source of your evidence when using evidence to support your thesis or claim.

4 Compare In your response, you must state what is the same AND what is the difference between the two things being compared. You should also include examples that show how things are similar or different.

5 Describe In your response, you must use words that create a mental picture of what is being described for the reader. Make sure you give characteristics and key features of what is being described.

6 Determine In your response, you should show a solution to a problem using logical reasoning.

7 Demonstrate In your response, show how something is done.

8 Develop In your response, show how the author grew the ideas in the text from beginning to end. Also, describe any parts of the text that were especially important to the growth of these ideas.

9 Explain In your response, you should provide supporting details and show the connection between the explanation and the ideas to make the answer clear. Focus on the cause and effect relationship or step by step consequences.

10 Justify In your response, you must give reasons or evidence to show why an answer is correct. Think to yourself: Why did I choose that specific answer?

11 Summarize In your response, you should identify the central idea and give important details supporting it in the text.

12 Use information from the passage to support your answer.
