LACEMOPS

L- Latitude A location’s latitude affects its overall climate High latitudes = year round low temperatures Middle latitudes = seasonality (experience all 4 seasons) Low latitudes = year round high temperatures

A- Air masses Air Masses: Cold air comes from Polar Regions and Warm air comes from Tropics

C- Continentality Places on the same LATITUDE will experience different climates if one is located near a LARGE body of water Cause: Water heats and cools slower than on land Effect: Coastal climates have a lower range of temperatures

E- Elevation Places at the SAME latitude will experience DIFFERENT climates if they have different elevations.

M- Mountain Barriers Mountain serve as a BARRIER for precipitation.

O- Ocean Currents Ocean Currents affect the climate of COASTAL locations. Warm water comes from THE TROPICS Cold water comes from the POLAR REGIONS

P- Pressure and Prevailing Winds Pressure: Pressure moves from HIGH to LOW High Pressure = heavy and cold Low Pressure = light and warm

S-Storms A storm is a DISTURBED state of the atmosphere and brings atypical TEMPERATURES, PRECIPITATION or WIND to a location.

Climographs Climate is defined as the temperature and precipitation patterns of a specific region over time Measures precipitation (usually in inches of rainfall) and temperature (usually in degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius) over the course of a year

Type of Biome associated with that place (not always present) Climograph: Measures precipitation (rainfall) and temperature over the course of a year Type of Biome associated with that place (not always present) Place where the temperature and precipitation were measured Scale used to indicate inches of precipitation Months of the year Temperature scale in degrees Fahrenheit (sometimes in Celsius) Bar graph showing the average precipitation Line graph showing the average monthly temperature

Climographs that have ‘mountain’ like temperature line tell us that city is located in the Northern Hemisphere Climographs that have a ‘smile’ like temperature line tells us that city is in the Southern Hemisphere
