February 13, 1891 – 1942 American born painter from Iowa. Grant Wood February 13, 1891 – 1942 American born painter from Iowa.

Regionalism He is best know for his painting depicting the rural American Midwest. Wood is associated with the American movement of Regionalism. Regionalism is an American realist modern art movement that was popular during the 1930s. Images of the American Heartland.

American Gothic – 1930

American Gothic House

Woods best known work of art. One of the most famous paintings in American art. Located at the Art Institute of Chicago. The figures were modeled by the artist sister and his dentist. The woman is dressed in colonial print apron evoking 19th century Americana.

The couple are in traditional roles of men and women. The pitchfork symbolizes hard labor. The flowers over the woman’s shoulder suggest domesticity. Many parody’s have been made using American Gothic.

The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
