33 FINAL JEOPARDY Javier wanted to write a poem for the school newspaper. He wanted his poem to have about the same amount of words as last weeks poem. Javier did not want to count all of the words in the poem so his dad suggested he find the mean number of words from the first three lines to make his estimate. Use Javier’s dad’s idea to find out about how many words Javier should use for a poem with 20 lines. Show your work and described your steps. You will not earn points for just counting the words! The poem from last week is on the right. The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim Because it was grassy and wanted wear, Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I marked the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. 34 Final Jeopardy First, I counted how many words were in the first 3 lines. There are 21 words. Then, I divided the 21 words by 3 lines so I could figure out how many words there were in one line. 21 / 3 = 7. This means the average line or sentence has 7 words. If I want to write a poem with 20 lines and I use a mean (about) 7 words per line I will have 140 words because 20 x 7 = 140.
